13 weeks and I’ve got a noticeable bump! Is this normal?

Hi all,
This is our second pregnancy however unfortunately our first pregnancy was a loss at 12 weeks.
We are now 13 weeks and 3 days with our second pregnancy, it’s been a bumpy road but baby seems all good at the moment.
However, the last week or so I’m significantly rounder and everyone is now noticing I seem to have a bump… even people who don’t know yet 🙈

I was told bumps usually are noticeable until around 16 weeks, is it even normal for me to have a bump this early? Sounds silly but I’m actually worried about it.
Im not exactly slim either, so I thought it would take longer as I have a bit of a tum (size 18).

An old lady yesterday even asked if I needed to use the bathroom before her yesterday!!

Normal with second

Have you had a scan yet? Could it be twins, or could you be further along than you think? That said, I don't think it's unusual to have a little bump at 13w

Nothankyov · 18/07/2025 12:15

I was in maternity clothes at 10 weeks. Perfectly normal. I had to tell friends before I was 12 weeks as it was so noticeable.

Purpleisnotmycolour · 18/07/2025 12:19

It can depend on posture, water retention, how strong your muscles are, where fat is carried. I'm sure you'll have a midwife appointment soon and she will reassure you. Everyone is different though. It must be an anxious time after a loss. I finished work at 8.5 months with first one and was barely showing, second/ third much earlier bump. Others will have an obvious bump from first couple of weeks, even though it's not actual baby as they are lower in your pelvis earlier on.

Yes we’ve had our 12 weeks scan, so far they’ve only seen one although all our family are convinced there’s another hiding 🤣 it runs in both our families.
at our 12 weeks scan she measured us as 11 weeks 5 but baby was all scrunched up so she did say it might not be accurate.

It's probably mostly bloat. The uterus is still fully within the pelvis at 12 weeks.

FestivusMiracle · 18/07/2025 12:40

I didn’t show until I was about 22 weeks with either of mine. I’m really slim and I think I have fairly large hips. But everyone is different.

Normal with second

I think it's normal with a second when the first has gone to full term (sorry OP, not meaning to sound insensitive). That's because abdominal and uterine muscles are laxer after the first pregnancy and with subsequent pregnancies you tend to show sooner.

I bloated RIDICULOUSLY in my pregnancies around the 11/12 week mark- My bump looked like I was 6-7 months gone. It went down and then the real baby bump came.

Ramblingaway · 18/07/2025 12:45

I was nearly a stone heavier at 12 weeks with my first. Went to a wedding and really had to squeeze into the dress I bought. It must have been pretty obvious looking back! My consumption of ginger biscuits to cope with the morning sickness might not have helped 😂

HuskyNew · 18/07/2025 13:55

Are you sure it’s not that you’re dressing differently or have changed your posture?
The baby isn’t big enough to show through a size 18 stomach. Those with early bumps are usually slim & even then just look a bit bloated

Wearing the exact same clothes and have had sickness, so if anything eating less than usual. None of my pants that fit me 2 weeks ago will fasten so unlikely just posture 🙈
Im assuming it’s bloat, but wow I look 6 months gone!
My waist has always been much smaller than the rest of my body, I wear size 18 due to boobs and legs mostly. Looks like I’ll have to size up haha.

Hi,

Sorry about your first pregnancy x

I'm the same. 13 weeks and noticeable bump with first pregnancy. I'm normally a size 10 but pretty curvy with a smaller waist. I had my first stranger ask about the pregnancy at 10 weeks. I've not been able to fit into my normal jeans for weeks.

I think it's mostly bloat as my stomach is much smaller in the morning vs night. I used to bloat quite heavily on my periods and size up in jeans anyway but nothing like this. So you're definitely not alone!

esperanzaa · 18/07/2025 18:44

My bump at 11 weeks (first baby) was so big that even MIL clocked it!

JuniperandI · 18/07/2025 19:09

I had a pretty big bump from very early on, turns out it was bloat!

GingerFox2021 · 18/07/2025 19:21

I’m 10w6d and I’ve been terribly bloated for the last 4 weeks. In the mornings it goes down, but in the afternoons I look really pregnant. I don’t want to announce until 12/13 week, but I need loose clothes already, so people might notice.

AwkwardPaws27 · 18/07/2025 19:58

I'm 11 weeks with #2 (but pregnancy number 6 due to miscarriages). Ridiculously bloated most days, but I've found it is less so when I've had natural yogurt for breakfast.

MsNevermore · 18/07/2025 20:02

With my first, I remember the hormonal bloat that looked like a mini bump, but that disappeared at around 10/11 weeks and then I didn’t even look remotely pregnant until about 24 weeks.
With number 2, my bump was obvious from about 17/18 weeks.
With number 3?!!
Theres was no hiding it pretty much from the get go. We’d wanted to keep it quiet for a while, but I remember getting dressed for a day out with the DCs when I was 14 weeks, looking in the mirror and thinking “Well, secret is definitely out now” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂😂

Dueindecemberr · 18/07/2025 20:30

I had a bump from 8 weeks this time which seemed ridiculous. However it seemed to go down a bit around 13 weeks as was all bloat, and now at 20 weeks I’m still managing to hide it (I want to have my 20 week scan before telling people). I think this is normal in second etc pregnancy.
