Echogenic Bowel - Worried Sick

Hi all,

I’m new here. Had 20 week scan on 8th July. Told all perfect, except presence of Echogenic Bowel.

A specialist was present on site, who re-scanned me there and then, who confirmed Echogenic Bowel, but said ‘a bit bright’ nothing super bright. Also confirmed all other measurements/checks were normal. She explained possible causes which obviously terrified us both (I appreciate she has a duty of care to say). Said about Cystic Fibrosis Test, CMV test. Mentioned Amnio, but in her opinion wasn’t necessary at this stage.

She referred me to RVI. 3rd scan was performed yesterday 15th July, with RVI specialist from Fetal Medicine on video link. Again confirmed everything normal but ‘mild’ Echogenic Bowel present. She also ran through the causes.

We had a Cystic Fibrosis test yesterday, to check for us being carriers, and infection test for CMV. We go on holiday on the 23rd July and we are beside ourselves. Has anyone had experience of this? How long do the CF tests take to come back?

Am I right in thinking it is ‘positive’ no other abnormalities, and baby measuring totally normal? Placenta function also all okay apparently. On previous scans they have mentioned ‘long limbs’ which again is good right?

I’m 31 and this is my first pregnancy and I’m just so lost with how to feel and no one is really giving me any sort of proper info.

they have already I’ve noticed booked growth scans from 28 weeks onwards for every 4 weeks,

thanks in advance,

I had this during pregnancy and gave birth to a completely healthy baby (now 7 years old). I think it is now picked up more commonly with better ultrasound scanners. I hope the same is true for your baby.
