Pregnant mums aged 40 - what was your combined screening test results?

I’m in the dreaded window of waiting for the results of my combined screening test results. I’m very anxious.

this is my third baby, I turned 40 a few months ago. So I can prepare myself for the results can any mums age 40 tell me what their combined screening results were for downs, Edward’s and patau? I know my age will make the result feel quite high risk so keen to know what to expect.

i just had my 12 week scan and the NT result was 1.6. I’ve had my NIPT results back and they came back low risk with a fetal fraction of 8%.

Hi, I didn't have the combined screening as I had the NIPT - if the NIPT comes back low risk then you can just ignore the combined screen - is no way near as accurate.

as you've already had a low risk result you can 'relax'!
:-)

Same as @Jennie1985 , both times.

Yep if you’ve had the NIPT there’s no point in the combined screening other than the part where they make sure baby looks normal on scan and NT <3.5 :) congrats

Could I jump on this and ask did you get your NIPT through NHS or privately? I've got my 12 week scan and combined screening next week. I'm 39, 40 in a couple of months. First pregnancy to get this far and I'm a bit confused by what's available when.

40 here and in my 12th week and got our scan next week and this exact thing has been playing on my mind!

Interesting to read everyones experiences

I paid for it privately. It was £400. For my second baby I waited until after I’d got my screening results (they were fine and low risk but I wanted extra reassurance), but this time had the bloods taken at 11.5 weeks so the nipt results are back before my screening results.

To add, you would only usually get the nipt test through the NHS if your screening results come back high risk.

I’m 42 in the last few weeks of my pregnancy and both downs and Edward’s came back as less than 1 in 5,000

43 , and had low risk NIPT results, followed by low risk 13 week NHS scan. They factor in your age at combined screening so you won't get lowest in thousands on the NHS but it was still low risk and low NT measurement etc. I didn't worry at all, after getting NIPT results down, privately at 10 weeks.

toddle19 · 14/07/2025 17:16

Thank you everyone, it’s reassuring to hear some haven’t bothered with the screening test.

feeling a bit better about the wait now x

Thanks so much for explaining @toddle19 . We'll have the combined screening next week and wait for the results and go from there I think. Wishing you the best with your results x

Im 41. Had the NIPT privately at 10 weeks on the suggestion of my midwife. Came back low risk with an 8% fetal fraction score.
I then had the combined NHS screening as well.
NT was 1.5 and the bloods all came back low risk at 1:5000 or more which I was not expecting at all given how my midwife told me the combined screening results would be 'awful'.

We did have an amniocentesis for other reasons later on and that confirmed the screening results were fine.

I’m intrigued to see what mine will be. I’ve already had the NIPT through the NHS (on the assumption I’d be high chance, as my eldest has DS and I’m 42), and am currently waiting for the results, but have been told to have the combined test too, as they want to check my PAPP A (they didn’t ask me to do this with DD2). I can’t remember, do they tell you the NT measurement at the time, and then the rest of the bloods results obviously follow later, or do they keep the NT measurement back to come with everything else?

curliegirlie · 15/07/2025 10:07

I’m obviously going to take the CT results with a mahoosive shedload of salt, as it’s nowhere near as accurate as the NIPT will be. I’m expecting it to come out as high chance this time, because I think already having a child with Down’s syndrome automatically raises it to 1 in 100. Ironically, with DD1 she was the one in 1 in 1,900!

I got my NT results on the day of the scan so I already know this, just waiting on my blood test results.

Hi all, I just wanted to update that my screening results came back today - negative. My DS result was 1:1300 and E/P 1:14000. Really wasn’t expecting that so feeling so relieved. The results were better than my first and second child put together, now I’m panicking they must be wrong!! But I’ll move on now and feel happy I can finally enjoy this pregnancy and tell our family / friends 🙏 x
