Measuring behind at 6w0d

First of all, I know no one can give me a definitive answer to this, but having been in this situation before (with a negative outcome), I’m interested to hear other people’s experiences.

This is my sixth pregnancy, and I have one child. I had a scan today at 6w0d (I’m pretty sure of my dates and had a strong positive on 24/6) and was measuring at 5w2d (CRL 2.8mm) with a heartbeat. This was with an abdominal scan.

I was surprised the sonographer saw anything without an internal scan, to be honest, and it could mean that the measurements aren’t as precise as they could be, but I’m feeling pessimistic to be measuring so far behind. I was in a similar situation back in 2021 - measured behind at just over six weeks (though I can’t remember whether I saw a heartbeat then or not), saw a heartbeat at 8w4d and miscarried at 9w0d.

I’ve booked a (private) follow up scan for just under two weeks time, so all I can really do is wait, but I wondered if anyone else has been in a similar position and what the outcome was, whether positive or negative!

I had a similar issue earlier this year. Internal scan at 6w3d measured 2.8mm CRL with a heartbeat and was recorded as "consistent with dates". I am now 21w and everything looks good and baby is kicking away! I had ovulation confirmed by a scan as CD 13 so am certain of dates. I was put back 3 days at the dating scan and have stayed on that track so I guess late implantation?

I think measurements at that stage are so small they can easily be off but seeing a heartbeat is a really good sign! Wishing you all the best.

I was measuring 4 days behind at what I calculated to be 6+5, measuring 6+1. I had already pulled myself back by 3 days to account for a later ovulation. So going off LMP I was technically a full week behind, and certainly couldnt account for those extra 4 days. I left with pretty much no hope of a positive outcome, but a week later the little baby had grown by 9 days. A week after that, another 9 days, making up for those 4 days short on the initial scan. Have a healthy DC now thank goodness. I know I have no way of knowing how your situation will pan out, but just some hopeful optimism from me that anything is possible. Thinking of you and hoping for a positive outcome!

Have you had a karyotype done? This was the pattern we kept getting, although I never saw a heartbeat on the unsuccessful pregnancies. DH has a balanced translocation. We did not get the miscarried embryos tested but I would put money on them having been unbalanced.

We did successfully go on to conceive two healthy children three years apart without the use of IVF. Some couples with a translocation do use IVF PGD (though it has a new name now I keep forgetting, sorry.)

@Frances567and @Upinthetreetops thanks for sharing your stories! It’s always nice to hear about positive outcomes, even though I’m not particularly expecting one myself. Congratulations on your successful pregnancies!

@BertieBottsYes I had full testing done privately after the second miscarriage as I had had a hunch from before starting to TTC that it wouldn’t be straightforward. Nothing came up, and the four miscarriages I’ve had so far were all for different reasons, so I think I’ve been particularly unlucky. I get pregnant easily so suspect I’ve just got a unfussy uterus!

DS was conceived naturally and is perfectly healthy so I know it is possible! I’m glad you had a good outcome in the end, too.

I had a scan at what I thought was 7.5 weeks and they measured baby to be 6.5 weeks. Had my 12 week scan yesterday (at what I would have calculated to be 13 weeks) and I measured 12 weeks, 2 days.
All looks good so far and midwives said the dates don’t matter too much as long as things are progressing so fingers crossed for you

Thanks, @PinkFlamingo888. It’s frustrating to just have to wait - I’m far too impatient and want to know now what the outcome is going to be! I’m glad all is going well with your pregnancy 😊
