Early pregnancy scan, sonographer doesn’t want to see me again?

Hi, I had a scan this morning at EPU I should be around 5 weeks 5 days. They could see the sack and yolk and she said she was happy with findings and maybe too early to see baby etc. I’ve read most people have a follow up 2 weeks later to see if the pregnancy has progressed, but I haven’t. I was just given a card to book my booking appt wjth midwife. Has anyone else had this?

You only have a follow up if it’s inconclusive or development is massively out of whack with dates

the sonographer was happy with the findings and the development was in line with your dates- so no follow up

Why did you have an EPU scan? That’s no standard, so the reason that took you there will influence follow up.

gamerchick · 10/07/2025 15:52

Doesn't sound as if you need a follow up OP.

This happened to me. I had my early scan for previous ectopic, all was fine discharged same day and told to book in. congratulations 🎊 take it as a positive. I booked another scan at 10 weeks for reassurance so maybe do that. But sounds like all is good don't worry xxx

This is good news isn't it? I'd be happy everything looks normal, congratulations.

Upinthetreetops · 10/07/2025 19:35

What was the reason for the scan, as that might help frame the overall answers you get?

Everythingisokay · 10/07/2025 19:42

I think it makes sense if eg the scan was just for confirming uterine pregnancy, which it did.

I hope all goes well and isn't too stressful for you.

Honeyx1 · 10/07/2025 21:19

Sorry for my vague post, the scan was because I had some spotting and back pain so they invited me in for a scan I presume to check the placement. However I always thought if they couldn’t see a heart beat etc then they would rescan to assess developments but there hasn’t been suggestion of a follow up, I was just given a “congrats on your pregnancy” card with the link to book in for my booking appt with midwife

Everything is as it should be for your dates. If you want a reassurance scan you’ll have to pay for one privately.

elliejjtiny · 10/07/2025 21:41

I had an early pregnancy scan at 9+1 and was told that because baby had a heart beat and was measuring the right size for dates i wouldn't get another scan until 20 weeks. I find some hospitals are more generous with scans than others.

Purpleballoo · 10/07/2025 21:44

I was concerned after bleeding and pain so got about three scans until they could see the heartbeat. I think you should book in for a private scan around 7 weeks for your own piece of mind, otherwise you’ll drive yourself mad

They don't need to see a heartbeat to see the placement though.

5+5 is very early and there's no guarantee you'll see a heartbeat at that stage. They usually make sure you are aware that you might not see it this early so you don't worry.

It doesn't mean anything is wrong and I don't mean to be dismissive, but a bit of spotting/ back pain isn't massively unusual. It sounds like there were no concerns to justify bringing you back.

You could always book a private scan for reassurance?

The first pregnancy I had early scans with the first scan showed the pregnancy was more than 10 days behind, I was offered a rescan in two weeks.
The next pregnancy I had a scan but I didn't have a lmp to date the pregnancy, they checked my HCG to see if it was worth doing a scan. Values came back at 100k the scan the next day was 8 +3 weeks. As the scan and HCG results matched up I wasn't offered any automatic follow up but was told to get in touch if I had any bleeding or concerns
