Hey everybody,

I had a midwife apointment today and we haven’t decided to find out the sex of our first baby. We noticed on the screen today it said my first name and surname and then next to the column Middle it said girl? We’re wondering if we accidentally found out the gender? We didn’t find out at our 20 week scan! I thought my sex would be documented as female not girl?

thanks

I thought this at thought but wouldn’t it be female or male? Never heard sex recorded as girl!

I don't think they routinely record the sex in your notes in advance of birth. I did find out, as it happens, but my midwives asked me (more than once across several appointments) if I was having a boy or a girl - it certainly didn't seem like they were privy to any insider info

I wouldn't imagine they'd bother keeping this information, it's of no clinical relevance.

I’m a midwife, if you don’t know the sex then we don't either. There’s no code anywhere, we genuinely do not get informed as (and I mean this really politely!) it’s irrelevant information to us clinically.

Mine is recorded as “girl” on a private scan report, I also thought it strange it wasn’t “female” but it was also called “gender scan”, not sex, so not surprised really. I don’t think it appears anywhere on maternity notes

Do you mean your gender was recorded as girl or your babies? Thank you! X

Sorry wasn’t clear, the baby! But that’s a private scan, I’ve never seen it anywhere on any NHS notes in either pregnancy x

It does sound strange to have your sex recorded as girl. I mean if they’re notes for pregnancy then it seems weird they need that column. But then again there’s no reason for them to record the sex of baby as that’s not an official part of the scan and really just a nice thing they do for people who ask. Are you sure it wasn’t some code or other word that just looked like the word girl?

Are we really now living in a world where the sex of someone who is pregnant has to be recorded?

JungleRun21 · 17/07/2025 13:43

The NHS dont record the babys sex in any of their notes until the baby is born.
Every appointment we've had recently, and theres been a lot of them, im asked if we know the sex before the sonographers, consultants or midwives do anything.
Its not necessary information to have logged at this stage.

Hey everybody had another midwife apointment today and was watching my midwife’s screen, she was showing me badger notes and another system and she double clicked into my name and underneath it said ‘baby girl’ so I’m guessing they do record it even if you want a surprise… unless they’ve have to automatically pick a gender on the system 🤷‍♀️ no idea what to believe!

Just to put your mind at ease I noticed mine said baby girl whilst at the midwife appointment but I found out the gender at 16 weeks… a boy. My son is 2 years old now.
