Positive pregnancy test after abortion

Hello, I had an abortion five weeks ago and recently took a pregnancy test which was positive whilst I was on my period. I’m thinking it’s probably due to either retained pregnancy or hormones exiting the body but also not sure if it’s a new pregnancy. Has anyone had the same?

Is there a chance it could be a new pregnancy?

Yes first time taking a test and I’ve done two others since, all positive. There is a chance but it would be very early to detect? Very confused

Hi I would recommend you talk to the service who provided,I am assuming, the medication you took.

Weren’t you asked to take a test around 3 weeks after the procedure to check whether it had worked? Without a negative then as a baseline it’s impossible to know, as it can take a while for the HCG to disappear.

I think it depends on how many weeks you were at the time of the procedure and how high your HCG was at the time. I had a MMC which I had surgical management for at 10 weeks. I tested positive for 4 weeks after. You should also have been asked to do a test after 3 weeks to confirm the procedure was successful. It's best you speak with whoever performed the procedure as you may need blood tests to look at your current levels of HCG and also a scan to rule out any retained product.

If you’ve had sex since the abortion then there’s a high possibility it could be a new pregnancy???

What contraception are you using ? Surely you wouldn’t take the risk of falling again unless you had to terminate for medical reasons and actually want to be pregnant again?
