7 weeks measuring small

So I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant. Yesterday I had some cramps that felt like period pain and today I’ve been bleeding. It’s not bright red and not leaking on a pad. My gp advised hospital and after waiting hours I finally got a scan. They found the heartbeat and couldn’t see an obvious reason for the bleeding. However they said baby is measuring a week behind and is also lower than expected. I’m going to be booked in for another scan in a week to check for growth.
I’m just not really sure what to think as the consultant said it could really go either way at this point. I’m still wiping blood and just feeling incredibly anxious.

Has anyone had a similar experience and everything has been okay?

I'll start of by saying I haven't experienced this, but I did know the anxiety of having to wait for an ultrasound when something could be very wrong. I wish you all the best and to try and stay busy this week, I know that saying that doesn't really help all that much though. Uncertainty is always a difficult place to sit emotionally and it's difficult to know if you should be hopeful or upset.

As for the actual issue at hand:

  • Did you have a regular menstral cycle? The age of the baby is determined using the average menstral cycle (evaluation on 14th day of a 28 day cycle) which is not accurate for a lot of women. As such, the baby may be a little older or younger than the doctor thinks. If you happened to track your cycle, ovulation, and sex, then you might be able to work out when you actually conceived the baby.
  • Potentially just implantation bleeding or even a subchorionic hematoma (harmless pocket of blood)
  • I would say a heartbeat is a good sign! Especially being strong enough to find a 7 weeks.

Hi there, multiple miscarriages here so I have some idea how you're feeling. My most recent pregnancy I was under the care of the recurrent miscarriage unit at the time so they got me in for an early scan at 5 weeks, based on my dates i.e. Since last period. There was a pregnancy sac but nothing visible inside. Went away feeling likely another miscarriage was on the way but at a scan a week later there was a visible foetus! I was dated 2 weeks behind up to 20 weeks when they changed to 1 week behind. I now have a healthy 6 month old 😊

So fingers crossed there's visible growth at your next scan. Bleeding can be very common but I know it's worrying and will be a very anxious time for you. Take care of yourself and best of luck
