Can't have dental work whilst pregnant?

What happens if you need dental work requiring xrays whilst pregnant? I have been today because I'm having some pain and I need a filling. They won't xray because I'm in early pregnancy and they don't want to do the filling without xrays because they don't know how deep it will need to go. If too close to the nerve it will be root canal or extraction rather than simple filling. I've been told to wait if i can but as I am in 1st trimester this seems ridiculous. I thought they could put a protective apron on you to protect for xrays? This is stressing me out!

You can have X-rays during pregnancy if it is considered essential for treatment. Sometimes it is best to wait until you are out of the first trimester. But really if the dentist feels unable to do the treatment without an X-ray then as long as you consent an X-ray should be done. Leaving you at risk of infection also isn’t good in pregnancy. If the dentist doesn’t think your filling is urgent then sometimes it is fine to leave and monitor it until you give birth. But if you are in pain then really you need the X-ray and treatment.

I doubt any practices have lead aprons anymore. They are no longer advised to be used in any circumstances.
