Didn't know i could claim UC with SMP

I split from partner when baby was 5mnths due to his alcohol abuse. I was receiving SMP from my employer.

As I had only SMP to live on I ran up credit card debts and aranged to go back to work early because I didnt know I was entitled to UC.

I am back at work now, realise I am entitled to UC to help with childcare costs, and have a meeting on Monday.

Is there anything I can do about the missed months of UC? I am heartbroken. The debt will take years to clear and I've missed out on time with my baby. I left an abusive relationship. I've always worked. I didn't know how UC worked and nobody told me.

No your uc will start from the date you made the claim. So you will get a one off back dated payment then weekly or monthly payments. The good news is you can use that money to help clear your debt and save for your future.

The turn to us benefits Calculator can tell you exactly what you are entitled to.

are you living alone? As in the only adult? Are you claiming single occupancy council tax? And child benefit?

if you are struggling with your debt citizens advice may be able to help you

Did you try applying for child benefit? The gov site says if successful it can be backdated for up to 3 months from the date you made the claim

SMP is treated as earnings so UC is deducted/reduced pound for pound once it exceeds your work allowance. You probably missed out on some UC but not as much as you might think.
