Pregnancy after patau

Hi everyone.

This is my first post but just looking for anyone been through the same. I’m 36 and have 2 healthy children (9 and 5). We found out last month (13 weeks pregnant) that our third baby had too much neck fluid. Two days later we went for invasion testing (needle into placenta) but her heart had sadly already stopped. I had d&c the following week and they tested and was confirmed patau syndrome (trisomy 13).

I know it’s just bad luck but we ttc right away and I’m now pregnant 5 weeks after d&c. Just wondered if anyone else after patau had healthy babies? Or even got pregnant quickly after a d&c?

ive also got such a dark pregnancy test line. I’m 10dpo but have been tracking hcg and ovulation so I’m defo pregnant. Just never had such strong dark line on multiple tests so early.

I think every little thing is going to worry me now.

Could be a multiple. My twins showed up early and STRONG on a pregnancy test. From what I understand of trisomy 13 it is not an indicator that future pregnancies will have it. I’m so sorry for the loss of your little girl x

Around half of miscarriages are caused by chromosome abnormalities, of which Trisomy 13 is one. The vast majority of these are spontaneously occuring at conception and do not raise the risk of the same thing happening again. Fingers crossed all goes well with your new pregnancy, you're not at any additional risk after one loss x

Hi OP, I'm a Patau mum as well. I'm sorry for your loss.

I wasn't able to have a d and c as I was too far along so had to labour, but was pregnant again the next month.

Did they offer you genetic counselling? I found that helpful.

Best wishes to you for this pregnancy.

Thank you all @ByLimeAntsorry for your loss too how is your next pregnancy going? They said I would be high risk this time and have a lot of checks. I didn’t take the counselling yet.

So sorry to hear this. I am now currently 22 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy. We have been really well looked after. I was given an nipt blood test at 10 weeks and this confirmed he didn’t have downs, Edward’s or pataus. We also was given an early scan with the nhs at 8 weeks. I’m not continuing as normal with a low risk pregnancy.
hoepfully u get your results soon as it does help with a little bit of closure. Keep us updated x
