Advice - Progesterone pessaries or Cerclage Stitch

Hi all, I am looking for some advice if possible. I am pregnant with my third child. With my first I had an emergency cerclage stitch at around 17 weeks as my cervix had shortened and told to be on bedrest (I had precancerous cells removed many years ago). Then with my second baby one was put in routinely around 13 weeks as I had a toddler and didn't want to be on bedrest. Now I am 17 weeks pregnant with a surprise third baby. My cervix is apparently 30mm which I'm told is quite normal, but since I have a history of it shortening, and as I don't want to risk a premature birth I have been offered a cerclage stitch, or progesterone pessaries. I am unsure whether to just get the stitch put in or whether to try the pressaries. Does anyone have any experience of progesterone pessaries and whether they worked for them. Many thanks

Hopeful bump for you.

Not been in your position (and sorry you’re experiencing this stress!) but I’ve recently stopped progesterone pessaries a couple of weeks ago at my 20 week scan (started due to bleeding and preterm birth risk early on), and I have another cervical length scan booked for this Thursday. I was 3cm 2 weeks ago, so am interested to see if this has changed since stopping 2 weeks ago!

Thanks @CustardCream31. Do you mind me asking why you stopped taking them? Thanks

Midwife advice… which I wish reassured me, but I question everything due to past failings!! Will see what Thursdays scan brings for me.
Have they given you pros/cons of either? Was that a consultant or midwife?

Thanks @CustardCream31. So do they just not feel it’s necessary for you after 20 weeks? Wishing you lots of luck. Mine is consultant lead.

Apparently not…!? But I’ve read different things online.
have you spoken to your midwife about it too?
Hope someone can shine some light on it for you!

It's a tough one and for me I'd go for the option with the most reassurance. With DD1 I had a shortened cervix, went from 3.4 to 2.4 in a week, I had progesterone pessaries from approx 23 weeks until 36 weeks, I did start to dilated once I stopped the pessaries and she stayed put until 40+5! With DD2 they started me on the pessaries at 14 weeks and I had no issues, I'm just one story though

Just checking in on how you’re doing? Have you spoken to midwife/consultant and made any decisions yet?

Had my follow up scan today which showed cervix length at 4cm…! So that’s a relief. Although slightly confusing as was 3cm last time - but that was done externally which I’m not told isn’t reliable enough in these cases, so it was internal today. Her little foot came into view and gave a big boot at the same time which was funny 🤣
