Thirsty in pregnancy - a problem?

Hi all!

I'm five weeks pregnant and almost since day 1 I've found myself thirsty almost all the time.

My mum had gestational diabetes but she got it later on pregnancy, but I'm terrified that it's related. In the UK they don't really see you until week 10ish so I haven't spoken to a midwife yet, but just worried this could be that.

Has anyone been thirsty in early pregnancy and have it be nothing, just a normal symptom?

It's very hot so you're sweating and you're having to build more blood in your first trimester as well as stsrt producing amniotic fluid. I'd be surprised if you weren't thirsty! I was constantly thirsty in both my pregnancies.

Apart from your mum having had it, do you have any of the other risk factors for GD?

Speak to a midwife or your GP if you have concerns. No one can assess you online, it's not possible to know whether your thirst is concerning or not.

Very normal, I have had this in all three pregnancies from before positive test, it’s one of my giveaway signs :)

You can’t have gestational diabetes at 5 weeks, it’s impossible. You’ve literally just weed on a stick! It is rare but possible in the first trimester, but not this early. If someone had diabetes at 5 weeks it would be preexisting diabetes. You’re probably just hot!

That was one of my earliest pregnancy symptoms - insatiable thirst!! Our bodies are working so much harder to grow a baby, hence easier to dehydrate. Totally understand your worries though, and would speak to your midwife at booking appointment in a few weeks. They don’t usually test until around 20-24 weeks anyway (unless reg flag signs going into second trimester).

I was really thirsty at about 23 weeks so they moved my GD test forward and I did have it (my sister had it during pregnancy and my Mum was diabetic). I don't know how early you can get GD but it's usually in the 2nd or 3rd trimester usually, but speak to your midwife if you are worried

I felt like I could drink the entire ocean in early pregnancy 🤣 no issues, and it went away after a few weeks

I had this! Just couldn’t seem to slake my thirst no matter how much I drank. No diabetes though although they did check.
