I’m 33 weeks pregnant and I’ve had a severe persistent cough for over a week. I’m sleeping 4-5 hours max a night from coughing, eating food triggers uncontrollable coughing and I throw it up so Ive eaten barely anything in days (a nibble at something for lunch at most, no breakfast or dinner), drinking also does the same and I’m finding I’m only weeing 2-4 times max in a 24 hour period and it’s been dark brown for the last 3 days. The coughing is triggering painful braxton hicks (maternity unit said it’s probably irritating my uterus), and I’m just exhausted tired hungry and fed up of coughing.

Midweek the GP said this is something I’d have to wait out, I called 111 this weekend who prescribed antibiotics but understand if they work, it might not be for 3 days. Other than getting rid of this horrendous cough, my concern is I’m probably dehydrated especially in this heat, and Ive literally been unable to eat for days. My maternity unit checked with me that I wasn’t bleeding or leaking amniotic fluid, and because I wasn’t, my issues sounded more medical than anything they were able to help with.

I don’t know how many more days I can go on like this for. How will non intentionally fasting and dehydration affect me and baby in third trimester? Is there anything else I should be asking for or .. is this it for as long as the cough lasts? I’m just really worried the ongoing lack of food and hydration being in the third trimester (should I be :/)

Have you tried eating ice lollies/melon/cucumber to increase your water intake? And when drinking just sip frequently, rather than drinking, as it’s more likely to stay down.
Don't lie down for at least an hour after eating.
Have you tried taking Gaviscon or similar?

I’m also 33 weeks, and have found the combination of heart burn and coughing awful. I keep being sick- although to a lesser degree! I’ve found Peptec (hard core gaviscon prescribed by the pharmacist) has been life changing 🤣

Might be worth getting the midwife to check your iron levels, as low iron won’t be helping if you’re unable to keep stuff down.

I hope you’re feeling better soon!

I had hyperemesis in the third trimester with my daughter and during a very hot week barely kept any water or food down. I even started losing weight again. She was 60th percentile on my charts at birth!

Weeing 2-4 times in 24h wouldn't worry me given you are struggling with hydration I would say it's ok at the moment if it drops to twice a day or less get checked out again.

Find anything that you like to eat, I lived off tinned peaches with my daughter. It might be worth discussing antiemetics or heartburn medication to see if that helps. I needed both in the third trimester with my daughter and my current pregnancy as the combination of nausea and heartburn makes it a challenge to eat and also causes vomiting too

Some coughs can really linger. I had bronchitis a couple of years ago and that lasted for nearly 3 months. I had a cough earlier this year which had me coughing to the point of vomiting for 3 weeks. I was prescribed antibiotics in case it was whooping cough which helped a lot - prescribed after 2 weeks. My partner and mum had it too but didn't get antibiotics and theirs lasted for 5 weeks
