Hello so I recently found out im currently having an ectopic pregnancy. I went for a scan and they said it’s in my left tube about 2cm they gave me 3 options surgery, injection or wait 7 days and go back for another scan because I’m in no pain what so ever. Now they was trying to push me for the injection but iv opted not to have it and wait because part of me feels like there wrong (this could just be me over thinking) has anyone else had this?

I’ve had two ectopics during TTC.

the first one was treated with MTX injection.surgery felt drastic given I wasn’t in too much pain or had ruptured. I’d already had some bleeding and felt body was trying to do what it needed so I waited a few weeks (my hcg was low too so didn’t feel the risk of rupture was high).
After weeks of waiting, scans and getting into the 6th week of back and forth, hcg up & down, I was fed up of the hospital and having scans and went for the injection. The injection itself was stingy but I didn’t have much in the way of symptoms from it. Some tiredness I think that was it. Your immune system is a little compromised too so you need to be careful. You can’t TTC for 3m.

second time it resolved itself within a few weeks.

however, it is now known, through a hycosy scan that my tube is blocked and so now I’m trying to get on the wait list for it to be removed (18m apparently). I would have had surgery the second time around to deal with the blocked tube but it sorted itself out.

im now pregnant through ivf as this was the safest (and quickest) route to become pregnant and bypass my tubes.

it could just be bad luck it’s stuck or you could have a blockage, it’s impossible to say at this point. If you don’t feel to anxious waiting, it may suit you to wait a few weeks. Start thinking now though of maybe a cut off point and what you’d do if it doesn’t.

I’d also ask for a hycosy scan after if you do the injection - if anything it can flush debris out if it’s not a full blockage. Heard of lots of women getting pregnant after. Mine however would not flush.

im sorry you’re going through all this, wishing you a speedy recovery xx

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Do you think they are wrong about the ectopic (as in, you think it's not ectopic) or wrong about the injection, sorry?

I had an ectopic pregnancy which needed surgery the same day I had the scan. I only had mild pain, but there was interal bleeding. The surgery wasn't too bad.

I've since had a baby girl, she's 10m old now. Conceived very quickly once we started trying again! At least with the surgery the potentially damaged tube is also removed.

Hope it's all resolved soon for you! Horrible waiting around for answers.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’ve had two ectopics. The first was treated with methotrexate and the second ruptured. You say you think that they’re wrong. Given that they’ve seen the pregnancy in your tube that’s highly unlikely.

I would definitely choose the injection over rupturing which, in my case, led to open surgery, blood transfusions, a long recovery period and complications which will affect me permanently. Are they monitoring your HCG levels closely? I didn’t have any pain until I started rupturing.

A lot of ectopics are never seen on a scan. That they can see yours and have measured it gives a lot of certainty to the diagnosis.

I do know how you feel. When they finally located my first ectopic I agreed to have the injection. I did ask the doctor whether there might have been a mistake and she was absolutely clear that there was not. Ultimately, ectopic pregnancy can become a medical emergency, and so I’d think it worth agreeing to treatment if the pregnancy is not resolving by itself.

I’m sorry you are going through this.

I’ve had two ectopics, first one treated with methotrexate (no side effects, just a little tired. Had to go back to the hospital every 7 days for 5 weeks till my bloods hit >5) and the second one my HCG was too high for the injection and I had to have surgery to remove the tube. I wish I’d pushed for the surgery in the first place to remove the tube. I was given a ‘choice’ with the first and chose surgery but after multiple surgeons and doctors being sent to persuade me to have the injection I agreed as I just wanted to go home. Both times my uterus was found to be empty and a mass located on my tube so there was so doubt it was ectopic x

Iv had 2 kids already this is the first time I’ve ever had an ectopic. The only reason I opted to wait is because it was only a 2cm mass and they’ve told me to come back Friday for another scan and more bloods, obviously if my hcg is still on the high side then I will have the injection but I’m just scared of the side effects of the injection 😔😔

The injection works by depleting your body of folate which the embryo needs to grow. This makes many women feel very tired. I also had a quite severe pain on the ectopic side which kept me awake and I almost went back to the hospital. But it passed and when I googled I found this isn’t uncommon. So not the most pleasant experience but the pain was just for a few hours and the tiredness only a couple of days. The injection itself was fine- I remember getting very hot when they did it, but I think that was just because I was upset. Obviously I then wasn’t allowed to get pregnant for a few months.

I did have a second ectopic as well in the same tube five months later, and that time had surgery and my tube removed as didn’t want it to keep happening. Like a PP I guess I could have shortened the process by going straight for surgery, but you never know how things will play out in advance.
