Hi all,

I have a private scan booked today. Going from my last period I am 8 + 3.

I didn’t find out I was pregnant with my son until much later so this is all quite new to me!

Do I need to drink a lot so I have a full bladder before the scan? And I’m hoping to see a heartbeat at this stage, is this likely at 8 weeks?

I have had some symptoms like slight nausea, some days exhaustion and tender nips but then some days I feel totally fine and part of me (I know it’s ridiculous) is worried there won’t be anything there when they scan and I’ve imagined it all😅

I'd go with a full bladder, it can help with the abdominal ultrasound (sometimes, mine didn't!)

Be aware at this gestation they may well want to do a transvaginal ultrasound, it often gives much better images. I found these more comfortable than the abdominal ones to be honest.

Bladder full or empty. I had an empty bladder for my scans around this time. With me, they could see a heartbeat at 6w2d or so.

Congrats, OP!

Oh, and it was the wand up the foof for me and she could measure the BPM, but I don’t think I had audio at that stage

"wand up the foof" love it!

At 8 weeks there should be a heartbeat visible yes. I’d go with a full bladder, they usually try an abdominal scan first and if that’s not very clear (which is often isn’t early on) they’ll ask if you’re happy to have a transvaginal scan instead. Good luck, hope it all goes well!

For abdominal scan they’ll need you to have full bladder. For internal (vaginal) there is no need for full bladder. If less than 10 weeks, they’d usually do an internal scan otherwise it’s too small to see. Good luck OP!

Thanks everyone. Thankfully only needed the abdominal scan and saw a nice strong heartbeat🥹
