Gained too much weight in first trimester

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and already gained 4kg. I was healthy BMI before getting pregnant but during first trimester I felt constantly famished and eating was the only thing that kept the nausea away, so I obviously gained a lot of weight quickly. My appetite has normalised now but I'm worried because I am way over the recommended weight gain for this stage of pregnancy, and I had hypertension before pregnancy because of stress and anxiety so I'm worried it will make my blood pressure worse. Did anyone gain a lot in the beginning and still gain the recommended amount overall?

You’re making a human being, give yourself a break. It’s common to gain more weight at the beginning and for it to level off at certain points and then rise again. Your body is undergoing the most enormous change it will ever experience, so be kind to it and yourself.

I was eating nonstop up until about 14 weeks. I was ridiculously hungry. Then suddenly my appetite has gone back to normal. I’m 16 weeks now and eating what I did before getting pregnant. It’s normal with hormone changes so give yourself a break and just try to make sure that at least some of what you eat is healthy snacks/meals. I’m sure I was the same in my first pregnancy too, in which my appetite fluctuated loads throughout.

I can't remember the exact numbers but I gained absolutely loads in the first trimester, definitely a lot more than 4kg. Things evened out and although I gained 20kg in total by the end (and didn't even have a big baby!) it came off easily. Your blood pressure will be regularly monitored by the midwifery team as you go along so I wouldn't worry about wright gain specifically.

ETA I had a normal pregnancy throughout, no GD or other concerns, just my body wanted to put on some more reserves before birth and BF!

I think average for normal weight people is up to 16kg for the whole pregnancy so I don't think your weight gain is too bad.
This is also me though I felt like I had to eat to stave off nausea and what I ate was carbs carbs carbs, after 14 weeks I chilled out, I'm still a couple of kg over what I should be according to my sports watch but it's nothing major

LaTable · 17/06/2025 15:42

I gained about 4kg by week 14. I'm now almost 20 and since the last weigh in (at 14 weeks) I've only gained 0.4kg
It does even itself out. I was much the same in all the other pregnancies, also, to be honest, so what? So long as you're not stuffing your face with 10 mccyd's a day on top of a tub of ice cream, you'll be fine I reckon!

Thanks all, this is sooo reassuring to hear.

@LaTable @WaltzingWaters @Babycatsarenice @SpringOne it's great to know you were similar, I know I definitely gained weight early in my last pregnancy but I don't remember gaining quite this much, so its good to hear your experiences.

@wordywitch yes you're so right, it just freaked me out reading the NHS guidelines for 10-12 kg weight gain and 'most of it should be after 20 weeks' and worrying I was gonna end up absolutely huge.

@Lucindaa sorry to hear you are going through this now, first trimester is so hard and I looked 20 weeks already from 7 weeks too with bloat, but tbh my bump itself doesn't look that much bigger now at 14 weeks, it's just my weight has gone up a lot.

I just dont understand the bloating as my whole tummy is rock hard especially around my breast line.

I'm hoping this is a positive sign given your experience
