I have the strangest pregnancy craving, it’s actually very embarrassing and very random and I have no clue where this has come from or even why I started to crave it in the first place!
I am 35 weeks pregnant but for the whole of my third trimester I am addicted to chewing sponges!
I love the texture on my tongue more than anything but also the smell and taste. It’s literally a daily addiction at the minute, I can’t even explain how it even started or what gave me that urge, I think it was a washing up with a sponge, started smelling it first then leading to chewing on it. I now have a bath sponge that I leave at the side of my bed to chew on 🤣🙈

I would love to hear some other strange and weird cravings, I wonder if anyone can top mine!

Sponges (eating) are a thing OP - Google it.

I had awful nausea in my (twin) pregnancy and the only thing that helped even a little bit was KFC. I found a branch that opened at 09.30 and went there 3/4 times a week. No interest in kfc either before or since.

Gaviscon tablets. Had to ration them out each day. I literally couldn’t stop thinking about when I could have the next one. Took a packet with me to the hospital when in labour and afterwards I put one in my mouth and had to spit it out it was so disgusting. Never had another one since in 16 years. Weird.

Haha I came on to say sponges could barely contain myself in the bath lol. I also loved the way toothbrush bristles felt on my teeth I'm so weird 🤣

mightneedalargesnifter · 10/06/2025 22:00

I used to eat the bubbles in my bath! I would go round M&S sniffing the bubble bath products for the one that would taste best ! Kids turned out squeaky clean 😂

My dm didn't get cravings but she kept complaining she could smell something unpleasant. Cue emptying and rinsing bins, checking everything in the fridge etc.

She ate most of her meals outside when she was pregnant, or she would have barely eaten anything.

I get the sponge thing. I had severe morning sickness and could only drink by sucking on a flannel, I also used to chew sponges.

Motherof1and2dogs · 11/06/2025 16:22

@scrivette another poster mentioned it’s very common, I honestly thought I was such a weirdo, but when I googled it, I was shocked just at how common it is!

@JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch I googled it and am shocked at how common it actually is! 2 or 3 others on here have responded with sponges as well!

Mine was Maraschino cherries, could get through jars of them. No idea why i wanted them and never wanted them since. I also craved really hot and spicy food which I hated normally. I remember discovering Nandos and ordering the hottest dishes they had. With elder ds I went of chocolate and couldn't stomach the taste or smell.

Sjb85 · 11/06/2025 16:54

My 2nd pregnancy it was the smell of blue febreze. I had to consciously force myself not to drink it 🤣 This pregnancy it's watermelon. I HATE watermelons when not pregnant so can't understand why im so obsessed with it now!

When I was expecting our first baby, (girl)I went absolutely mad for Flipz in white chocolate - but I had to eat them a certain way - nibble the chocolate off, then chew the salt crystals off and then let the actual pretzel dissolve in my mouth.
Thing is, I can't stand white chocolate or salt.

With my 4th (boy) and 5th (girl) pregnancies, I went the other way and seemed to have massive food aversions - 4th pregnancy, everything was horrible and I struggled to eat beans on toast and 5th pregnancy, the smell of fried food made me heave really badly (and I worked with a slob who loved stuffing his face with huge fat sandwiches full of hot fried eggs, fried bacon, fried mushrooms and fried onions, every single morning).

My last pregnancy (boy) I absolutely craved battered sausages from our local chipshop, although weirdly after every single one, towards the last couple of bites, I'd get the overwhelming nausea - but I craved them so much, I couldn't not have them.

Yes me too! I favoured a herby or pine type.

Champagne 🥲

I absolutely hate wine/champagne/cava/prosecco normally, and am 38 weeks and yet to succumb.

Fully expect baby to be some kind of mini Marie Antoinette when she emerges. I've tried Schloer and Nosecco and all the rest of them but I think it's the actual kick of alcohol + bubbles combo I'm craving. Can't honestly see an evolutionary reason for this!! 😂

Cactiiii · 11/06/2025 19:02

I had pica - sponges, ice, coal, hair, hairbands, toothbrushes (chewing) and smelling cleaning fluids, new shoes and scratchy carpets. It was a compulsion. I still have the chewing pica 9 years later.

absolutely fucking weirdo 😂😂😂

mummysmagicmedicine · 11/06/2025 19:05

Kind of wish I had an exciting one but for me was anything pickled, gherkins, olives, etc anything like that!

mumsie8 · 11/06/2025 21:01

Ice. I ate ice. My husband even bought me an ice grinder. I thought about it constantly, and ate it from the minute I woke up. I dont actually know how true this is but I was told or possibly read somewhere, that it can be a sign of anemia. And yes I was anemic.
Completely went off tea, couldn't stomach the smell or the look. As soon as the baby's popped out, it was the first thing I drank. Such a weird, weird amazing thing.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 11/06/2025 21:09

Ice. Could t freeze it at home fast enough so bought and ate bags and bags and bags.
Went through McDonald’s drive through and ordered large cups of ice.
Bought 2 ice machines but broke them with over working them!

It’s iron deficiency and anaemia!

ThomasShelbysfagend · 11/06/2025 21:11

Weirdly, the word “breakfast” written or spoken, made me violently sick!!! The actual word turned my stomach and made me vomit! Weirdo that I was!

Zapx · 11/06/2025 21:27

I ate an absolutely insane amount of chocolate… And lettuce, and satsumas.

Mugcake · 11/06/2025 21:35

Tuna and chicken (I'm a vegetarian)
Tuna with pineapple specifically
Tuna and a Jam doughnuts
Icicing, the type you get on cherry bakewell
Strawberries

OhMehGoddess · 11/06/2025 21:37

Ice with first pregnancy, ate them literally by the bowl full. The smell of warm oil when my DH worked on metal things, felt like I could just eat it. Not cooking oil.
