Early assurance scan..mass found near ovary

Went for my early assurance scan this morning at 7 weeks.
The pregnancy itself was in the correct place and measuring 6w4d and a heartbeat could be seen. The sonographer then spent ages checking my ovaries and zooming in and out taking images etc, she kept saying she wanted to double check my right ovary because there was something blocking it. At this point I was silently panicking that something wrong, she asked me to sit outside whilst she phoned her clinical lead for advice. I was already emotional due to pregnancy hormones so had a little cry in the waiting room waiting for her to come back out.
Turns out there’s a 10-11cm ‘mass’ near my ovary and I need to be referred urgently to the hospital to have investigations.

I have no idea what this means for me or the pregnancy, has anyone else experienced this? I’m not really sure what the point of this post is,I just feel like I need to share

Might it be a cyst? I had one while pregnant - assume it resolved - it was never checked post delivery and has not given me a problem as yet. Don’t know if it’s there still or not.

I'm assuming a mass... could potentially indicate a Dermoid cyst, which generally we would be born with & not necessarily known you have one, unless symptomatic. They are made up from body cells that can include teeth & hair!

Other cysts are generally fluid based and they can disburse on their own, whereas a Dermoid would show up as a mass and can potentially continue to grow until it's removed.

Generally if they are more than 5cm they would recommend surgery to remove it.

However, a Dermoid cyst usually is determined during the scan. Hopefully, it's possible the further referral has been made due to the size & the pregnancy.

How big was it? Did they not refer you on when they saw it on the scan?

I’m sorry that you have experienced this today, you must be out of your mind with worry, but the baby looks okay and take reassurance that they have found this and are accelerating it quickly, wishing you the very best of luck that everything is okay xx

I had a 10cm x 6cm mass on my left ovary. It was removed 11 years ago. It was a Granulosa cell tumour, a slow growing treatable cancer.

No they didn’t. I’ve no explanation for the lack of follow up - can only assume that they thought it was some kind of pregnancy symptom.
