Iron tablets - please advise

Afternoon,

I've just been told that my iron results from my last blood tests were borderline and so my doctors have prescribed my iron tablets. Now, I've been suffering from the usual pregnancy complaints and (too much info warning) have only just got back to the point where I am pooing regularly again! (Wholewheat everything plus tonnes of fruit and veg)

I'm assuming that my borderline iron won't affect bean (I'm 27+5), just me and was wondering if I'd be able to persuade my midwife to let me try some natural solutions that don't cause constipation and if I haven't improved it by my next blood test (1 months time) then I'll go onto the iron tablets. Can you recommend any alternatives?

Also, please let me know if it will harm bean as obv I'll take whatever is needed (mmmmm prunes ). Or maybe I'm making too much of a deal of it and the tablets won't affect me [hmmm]
All advice gratefully received!!

If you don't want to pay for spatone/floradex, and your iron levels are so low you need a proper supplement, you can get ferrous fumarate prescribed. This does not upset your tummy or make your constipated unlike ferrous sulphate. It costs slightly more so you must ask for it specifically and explain you cannot tolerate ferrous sulphate. It gives you green poo rather than black .

i dont like them makes me constipated to
ive had a few shots of the injections as well as my iron levels dropped to 6.3 at 28 weeks
i was admitted with breathing probs thats how they found out
being a diabetic i cant boost my own iron levels quite so easily as so restricted to what we can eat or drink
im going to check this spatone out tomorrow

Hiya

Just to let you know you can get Spatone on prescription, it hasn't been blacklisted for prescription use yet. I spoke to my friendly local pharmacist today!

Nicki,

You are a star, just got my GP to change his prescription from pregaday to spatone.

I already have enough horrible side effects from my preganancy and constipation is not one I want to add!

Take care Ladies,

Alina
