Private Gender Scan Accuracy?

anon1411 · 08/06/2025 20:12

How many of you have been to a private gender scan at around 16 weeks and it be accurate for you?

We have one booked this coming week to find out because truth be told I'm too damn impatient to wait until my 20 week scan 🤣 but I've read a few posts elsewhere, saying that its not accurate and now it's got me worrying because I'd love to tell my little boy he's having a brother or sister.

Sorry feeling anxious and probably being a tad dramatic. 🫠

I found out at a 16 week scan....wasn't a private sex scan though, just a normal appointment with the gynaecologist. Was pretty obvious and accurate.

Lostworlds · 08/06/2025 20:14

I had a scan at 16 weeks for both as I was too impatient to wait. It was fairly obvious with my little boy 😂 my little girl was very clear too!

Littletreefrog · 08/06/2025 20:14

I had one at 16 weeks as I wasn't having a scan at the usual time when they tell you the gender (20 weeks?) for a number of too boring to explain reasons.

Mine was incredibly accurate as baby was in the right place and it was obvious to everyone what they were. They did say that if it wasn't to get a good angle to be almost certain they would say that and they wouldnt guess.

Profpudding · 08/06/2025 20:17

I had one at 20 Weeks with my second where I was told it was a boy
It was not

PurpleTurtleMoose · 08/06/2025 21:03

I had one at 16 weeks and was told girl. 20 week scan confirmed the same. There's still a small chance they're both wrong, but so far it does seem to be accurate!

mynameiscalypso · 08/06/2025 21:06

DS was very clearly a boy at 16 weeks. No mistaking it.

Mamatolittlemonsters · 09/06/2025 18:08

3 done at 16ish weeks and all were correct

had convinced myself last one was a boy so didn’t believe them when they said it was a girl 🤣

August1980 · 09/06/2025 19:45

Had a 16 week scan too! Wasn’t gender though - hemotoma bleed but they asked if I wanted to know! Thought might as well. It was accurate! Feeding her as we speak

dontcomeatme · 09/06/2025 19:57

My DSIL was told girl at 16 weeks, boy at 20 weeks, boy again at 21 weeks, and then girl at 22 weeks 😅 out popped a girl, so half were right!

anon1411 · 09/06/2025 20:36

Thank you so much for all your replies...

2 days until my scan and I'm so excited. I feel like there is always that small chance they could get it wrong but not going to overthink it and just enjoy the moment... and fingers crossed they are right 🥳🤣

It’s sex, not gender.

Is there a reason you want to know the sex? Do you carry a sex based genetic condition that you need to be aware of?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 10/06/2025 07:58

I have no idea why anyone would pay for a sex scan. Just because you pay it doesn't mean it's better.
you'll have a scan around 20 weeks
With DS3 I was on medication which may have affected his CNS and consultant was able to see he was clearly a boy at 11 weeks, 24 years ago.

If OP wants to say gender she can. Why are you so bothered by the word. A baby doesn't choose their gender, it's determined by science as it should.

It's quite commonly referred to as gender so maybe not worth objecting to. You're not wrong that it's technically sex, but certain terms (gender reveal etc) just sound wrong when you substitute sex!

There's various reasons you might want to know the sex, eg, ease of chosing names.

You couldn’t be more wrong @heidyho. Sex is science, gender is a social construct, one that tends to be imposed on us by brainwashing; pink & dolls for girls, blue and dinosaurs for boys, etc.

and we need to use the right terminology @PurpleTurtleMooseto stop this confusion about the difference between sex & gender.

usedtobeaylis · 10/06/2025 19:06

I did (I had a few private scans due to anxiety in pregnancy so it wasn't explicitly a gender scan, it was just the one I could book for that point in pregnancy) and they were correct. Then confirmed by the NHS 20 week scan.

But who gives a flying toss...seriously. if people want to dress their baby boy in blue and have boyish toys and vice versa let them be . Don't try to push your ideals on everyone else.

retiredpickme · 10/06/2025 21:35

Don’t they generally tell you how confident they are? Years ago at my 20-week scan it was very clearly a boy, the sonographer said she was 100% certain as it was so obvious. A friend was told at her scan they were about 90% sure it was a girl (she did have a girl) so they should be able to give you an idea of how certain they are.

Hi OP, did you have your scan today? Hope all goes/went well!

AliBaliBee1234 · 11/06/2025 22:44

Mine flip flopped between boy and girl. They're not 100%

This isn't true. An NHS scan is very focussed on health and rightfully so. The tech is busy concentrating and isn't there to show you the baby for a nice moment.

Private scans are much nicer if you just want a nice memory and to see the baby properly.

Because @heidyho using the terminology ‘gender’ instead of sex, and the resulting subconscious moulding causes confusion like this;

My son opened his legs helpfully at 12 weeks and flashed a clearly defined balls and penis I exclaimed oh my god he’s definitely a boy! The sonographer would not say but her smirk gave me the affirmation

however my daughter did not cooperate at her 3D scan at all around 16 weeks so hardly saw anything

good luck take some cold water
