Had to repost as I passed the edit window…

Had a ‘gender reveal’ scan yesterday. We were in there absolutely aaaaages as baby was chilling and wouldn’t get in to position. We even had to come out for a walk and a bounce on the ball… eventually, after much poking a prodding, the scan lady says she has it! We didn’t ask as we just took a canon to let off in the garden later on. Got home and it’s a boyyyy! 💙 Which is fabulous, as we have two already. However, I really can’t make out what the picture is of. With my other two boys I could quite clearly see what was showing they were boys, but this….i’m just so confused! Can anyone help me please? What on earth is the ‘it’s a boy!’ arrow pointing to?!?! 😂 don’t the side bits look like the womb rather than legs?

I have 4 boys and I cannot work that out for the life of me OP! Sorry

Poppins2016 · 07/06/2025 08:09

When I looked at the scan, I assumed the pointer was on the penis, AKA the "white line"... but then realised that the baby wouldn't appear that small (assuming you're close to 20 weeks)?!

So I guess the entire thing in that area is the penis and testicles? 🤔

I wonder what the round "balloon" like image is?!

...as you can tell, I'm only posting because I'm intrigued/confused too, and not because I can add anything of medical value, sorry!

The only thing I can suggest is to send the picture to the clinic and ask for a really brief explanation of what it is that you're seeing, as you're curious?!

That’s a great idea, I’ll send them a message today! I have a video too which makes that round area even bigger when she zooms in, so I really can’t see how it could be two testicles…I am so confused 😂😂😂 thank you for responding! 💙

Im also wondering what the round ballon is !? .
Doesnt look like either of my 2 boys scans . I did initially think girl with the flat white line between the legs and the tech has confused the cord for the male genitals , But I am useless at gender guessing !

hope you get some answers and update us !

I’ve already messaged the scan place for more information, so I will keep you updated as soon as I know more.♥️ All the way through the scan (we were in there for absolutely ages!) she kept saying baby’s legs are closed and there’s the cord…and then she just said she’d got it and off we went. The lady before us had to reschedule as her baby wasn’t in the right position too. And we had our two boys with us…so perhaps she was just eager to not have to reschedule again and could already see we had a boy gang 😂 I don’t know. I’m happy about it being another boy, but I’m just completely confused with this pic 😂 thanks for your reply!

I'm a nurse not a sonographer, so some experience of ultrasound interpretation but I'm not a baby expert!

The white around the edge is babies legs, you're looking from the bottom up. The bit below the pointer is the scrotum and penis, the little circle bit above is likely a section of umbilical cord!

Danyt · 07/06/2025 09:43

I’d think that too, but on the video it zooms in and the bit you’d think was the scrotum changes. Thank you though for your expertise ♥️ it gets taller…it won’t let me post the video, but I think this screen shot shows it…

So what you have to remember is that an ultrasound is a 2d picture of a 3d structure, so the images produced are more of a cross-section to show the internal structures than a side on image (like an x ray might show you a bone/obstruction, but not the inside of it, an ultrasound won't just show you the outline, it can be used to look inside).

So the shape at any given point isn't what you would see from the outside of the baby, it's a "cut" almost of the baby at a certain point inside. So when the video "moves" that's not necessarily your baby moving (although obviously they are moving too!) but more likely the sonographer moving that "slice" up through the structures of baby, so as they get to a wider part of the scrotum it'll look like it's grown, If you reach a part where the penis is pressed up against it, or move away from the scrotum towards just the penis, it may look "taller", but it's just where you're at in the scan. I'm trying to think of an analogy and the best I can come up with is if you kept taking slices off the bottom of an onion and took a photo of the cut surface each time it would look different depending on if you were at the thinner ends of the wider middle part of the onion!

LG93 · 07/06/2025 11:54

Also the scrotum looks massive because it's super zoomed in, if you remember the huge white bits around the edge are his legs, it helps keep the size in proportion a bit in your mind!

Danyt · 07/06/2025 11:57

I really just don’t get it. So this is giant zoomed in legs? On the photos of my other 2 boy’s gender scans it was really clear with a little bottom and testes and penis. 😂 I guess all will be more clear at 20 weeks and when I can discuss it too ♥️

I must say this is the most confusing scan photo they have given you. Cannot make anything out of it.

Danyt · 07/06/2025 12:09

here are some more photos 😁 they took over 40 as baby wasn’t moving much so we were in there for a very long time!

Im a sonographer and that picture is not good at all for determining gender. Everything looks obscured by the cord. That doesn't mean they couldn't see better on a moving image but the photo proves nothing!

Exactly what I thought…and when thinking with my other two boys it was absolutely so clear what I was looking at. Thank you for your reply x I’ll see what the scan place say when they get back in touch. Thanks again!
