Is it standard for people to go from week 20 - 30 without seeing a midwife?

I saw one at my 20 week scan, but only because I asked, they wouldn't have otherwise. And I won't be seeing one until I turn 30 weeks. So in effect, I could have gone from 12 weeks to 30 without seeing anyone.

Is this fairly standard now? I'm all for not messing with things, and I don't think there's any problem with the baby, but it seems like a very long wait with no contact?

I think different areas are different but in my pregnancy hand held notes there is a list of frequency of antenatal visits required as follows (for second or subsequent babies):-

Prior to 12 weeks - may be two visits
16 weeks
20 weeks
28 weeks
34 weeks
36 weeks
38 weeks
41 weeks

Your notes may have one too

Quite common if it is your second child I think. I am pretty sure something similar happened to me with DS2 which was a bit of a shock at the time but then on the other hand, if you feel OK, the baby is moving and the scan was fine, you probably are OK.

Good luck.

Ooh, hello again SKYTVADDICT! Thanks for those dates.

Niecie, I think it's because with #2 you often don't have time to think about beign pregnant, and then when midwives don't want to see you either you can start to wonder if its real at all, or if you're just overdoing the magnums. (Well, that's how I feel, anyway!)

Thanks for the replies.

Defintely agree about wondering if it is real! I was lucky as second time around I had a 12 week dating scan. First time around I didn't get one of those (different health authority). Definitely helped with the reality check!

I think I had a similar schedule to SKYTVADDICT except that I wasn't seen until 12 weeks at the dating scan - no appointments before that. I think, in the end, they dropped the 16 wk one and said it wasn't necessary.

probably standard these days. In fact, come to think of it I haven't seen one since my booking in apt in February at 8 weeks and I don't see a midwife again until 28 weeks (next month). I have seen my GP and my consultant though.

It is scary going for so long between appointments though.

If you are worried see your GP, they will probably still give you a check up and listen for the heartbeat to reassure you.

I think I had these appts with the midwife

booking appointment 8-10 weeks
triple test 16weeks
GTT/other blood test? 28 weeks
34 weeks
36 weeks
38 weeks

never got to it but had one booked for 40 weeks

I'm with my first baby and finally saw the midwife for the first time at week 21, and will see her again week 29/30. In between I've had my '20-week' scan at 23 1/2 weeks.

Basically if you get to week 14 without noticing you're pregnant despite trying, they tend not to worry after the first scan...

ButterflyMcQueen · 25/05/2008 00:51

i went 12-34 weeks

no one called me - i felt fine

bit crappy really - no one cares but i am fine!

izzybiz · 25/05/2008 13:17

Here we have MW appoinments at 10, 16, and then 28 weeks, gets more frequent after that.
You have the 20 week scan too obviously, my midwife sees women at 25 weeks too as she thinks going from 16 to 28 weeks is too long.

sweetkitty · 25/05/2008 13:33

Mine have been

booking in 16 weeks
24 weeks
28 weeks
34 weeks

only get one scan at 16 weeks but as I had a threatened mc I had my one scan at 13 weeks.
