21 weeks & cervix issue, already dilated

I went in to hospital yesterday to get some pains checked out, the doctor looked at my cervix and (seemingly incidentally) saw it looked slightly dilated, about 0.5cm which I was very worried by. They did a transvaginal scan and measured the cervix length to be 27-29mm which they seemed reassured by (they said it was long) and there was no funneling. The doctors weren't sure what was happening but said my cervix could be "weak". I've since done a lot of googling about incompetent/short cervices and what I'm reading is terrifying, as is the possibility of losing my poor baby as she's doing so well and wriggling around so much 😢

I was put on progesterone and told to return in two weeks for a rescan, I've since read that some people are given a stitch to close up the cervix and prescribed bedrest - but neither of those were even talked about as options?! Just wanted to hear about others' experiences and how it went. Dr said I shouldn't be too worried but not sure if she was just trying to make me feel better as it's not like there's much I can do except wait. It sounds very alarming though that I'm already dilated, can this close back up? I know cervices can be slightly open if you've given birth before but this is my first. Hoping for some advice or to hear your stories!

Hi, sorry you’re going through this stress. Can you contact the doctor or your midwife so you can talk things through more?
How many weeks are you? It would be unusual for your cervix to be genuinely open if still 27-29mm long, and I think the scan is more likely to be correct than the speculum (the outside of the cervix can sometimes look a little open but just be normal). >25mm is generally within normal and doesn’t always need any extra treatment, cerclage would really only be considered if your cervix shortens to <25mm. it sounds like probably everything is fine, I hope everything is looking nice and stable in your follow up :)

Thank you so much for your response! It makes me feel loads better and I do pray it's the case that the cervix isn't genuinely dilated. It's puzzling because from the stories I've read I haven't come across someone who's dilated without a shortened cervix, yet the doctors who examined me did say it was a tiny bit open. I'm 21 weeks pregnant.
