Is it okay if the baby is born at 37 weeks ?

I am 36+5 now having gestational diabetes and a big baby ( around 85 percentile) The baby was weighing 6 lbs 12 oz on 35+4 scan.

I have been getting lot of mucusy discharge , many times along with brown blood for the last 3 weeks. I think its my mucus plug coming out slowly. I have been to maternity unit, they asked me to visit if there is any pain.

My cervix has shortened to 2 cm in the last week scan.
So wondering is it okay if the baby is born at 37 weeks.

Of course it is

DappledThings · 05/06/2025 18:57

Yes, it's not classified as premature

Lotsalotsagiggles · 05/06/2025 19:02

Both mine were botn at 37+3 and 37+6

With gestinal diabetes its mostly safer for baby to be out after 38 weeks than in because if complicsyomsthat can change quickly

MumChp · 05/06/2025 19:03

Yes! Babies do fine at 37 weeks.

ShowOfHands · 05/06/2025 19:03

37 weeks is early term ie full term but on the earlier side.

Mine was born then and nary an issue.

ShesTheAlbatross · 05/06/2025 19:05

I was induced at 37 weeks due to PPROM. She’s fine.

Nametobechanged · 05/06/2025 19:05

My twins were born at 36 weeks and didn’t need any special care.

Brbreeze · 05/06/2025 19:09

Mine were both 36+6, technically premature but fully cooked and average weights of 7 & 7.5lbs. Only annoying element was all that being technically premature entails - more monitoring in labour so needing the monitoring belt on all the time and being on labour ward instead of being allowed in the birth centre.

Thanks for all the reassuring messages !

Wondering if anyone had a similar discharge and how long they were able to go until labour.

I never had this discharge, but I did have gestational diabetes and was induced at 39 weeks. As far as I know they don’t induce you early unless your waters have already broken or there is a concern for the babies welfare. So you will either go into Labour naturally at some point or they will probably want to induce you at 39 weeks unless there is anything else going on. All the best and good luck x

my baby ( 21 now) was born at 36 weeks and came home within 24 hours. She’s been absolutely fine and has no health issues as a young adult

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/06/2025 21:57

Yep

DS was born at 36+5.
All good.

Rtmhwales · 06/06/2025 00:04

Definitely! DD was born at 36+2 in July and we went home that day. DS was born at 31+6 and was healthy too.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango2023 · 06/06/2025 00:06

My son was born at 35+5. He was perfectly healthy and 6lb8.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 06/06/2025 00:08

Mine was 34 weeks, we didn't do + days back then, 5lb 5oz if it hadn't been a weekend we would have been home the next day.

Dyra · 06/06/2025 00:21

I had pre-eclampsia with both mine and they were born at 37+1 and 37+6 respectively. The oldest is in Reception and is doing excellently. The youngest is 3, and is already far too smart for his own good. They were both slightly jaundiced at birth (very common), and are otherwise perfectly healthy.

DS came at 37 weeks on the dot. I’d just gone on maternity leave, having a lovely bath looking forward to two weeks off to nest before my scheduled c-section and my waters broke in the bath.

Mucus plug came away about 36 hours before.

With DD’s I lost mucus plug whilst in early labour and regularly contracting and with other kids I didn’t lose it at all. Mucus plugs can regrow. All giant babies.

blw95 · 06/06/2025 20:36

My son was born at 37 + 2, a spontaneous natural labour. He was perfectly healthy and weighed 7lb ☺️ so I wouldn’t be worried x

OhPickle · 06/06/2025 20:47

I had my baby at 35w on Monday and we are home and settled. I wouldn’t worry x

My second was born at 36w and was fine. 37 weeks is no longer universally considered full term, but your baby is going to be absolutely fine.

@biscuitsndtea

How are you ?
as your thread was written 10 days ago which makes you
36+5 +2 = 37 + 8 = 38 +1 ?
( as I said earlier, we didn't do + days in my time )

so I think you may have had your baby ?
