I had preeclampsia in pregnancy and given Labetalol for my blood pressure. I’m 8 days PP , for those who had high Bp how long did it take for your blood pressure to return to normal? As before my meds it’s still really high.

Have you had a review? Because post partum preeclampsia is still really dangerous x

Around 3 months if I remember correctly. Mine was 180/140 at it's worst.
By the way I was prescribed labetalol by the maternity hospital. My GP is a cardiac specialist and revised it to something different (more modern in his words) straight away. I can't remember what it was though.

I had post partum preeclampsia. I was not discharged from home midwife care until about 3 weeks after delivery. The midwifes came once a day and I went to out of hours once a day. On a couple of occasions out of hours wanted to re- admit me to hospital but agreed with midwife care, I could stay at home. So about three weeks, but only on the understanding I would monitor my blood pressure and contact GP/midwife if it was high.

Mine took months, and a lot of medication.
Be patient and look after yourself

Mine took a while after birth to get back to normal levels and then even longer for my liver function to settle down as the labetalol raised it.

look after yourself ❤️

About 3 months x

Househunters1 · 28/05/2025 15:44

I’d say 3 months for me

CrispAppleStrudels · 28/05/2025 15:58

My BP went back to normal relatively quickly but it took around 3months before I was off the medication. I had to send weekly BP readings to my GP who was really good about helping me to slowly taper off the medications. But as you are still under the midwives, it might be worth checking in with them as maybe your meds need adjusting or to go onto a different one - i needed two as labetalol alone didn't work for me.

Our hospital also offers everyone who had preeclampsia a heart ultrasound and ECG (or EKG? I forget which one...) at 12weeks post partum - if you get offered one, definitely take it up as it was really interesting and they gave me some advice about avoiding longer term heart issues (now linked to preeclampsia in pregnancy).

@Dox9 was it nifedipine? I was on both labetalol and nifedipine (18 tablets a day at discharge 😩) by the end of pregnancy and immediately post partum.

Sounds vaguely familiar but I really can't remember. They discharged me with a ton of tablets after I had an emergency section at 40+14 😬 it was something ludicrous like 4 labetalol every 4 hours plus painkillers on a different schedule. My blood pressure was fine actually until the emergency section.

I’m 3 months PP got taken off tablets after 6 weeks and it’s only just some what normal but some days it still spikes massively high. It’s awful, I feel for you x

I’m now 6months pp, on long term blood pressure medication found out it was my kidneys playing up that’s all (I have kidney issues) that first 6 weeks was scary I felt awful and it’s improved lots . Congratulations on baby

4 weeks for the blood pressure but I was under midwife care for a month afterwards who would monitor me daily. 4 months for my liver function to get back to normal and come off all meds and be given the all clear that my body had gone back to normal. So these things do take some time. If you are concerned at all, please just check with someone. They won't mind.
