Early pregnancy orgasm pain

Really random but I had read about orgasms causing cramping in early pregnancy so I hadn't planned on having one. Lucky me last night I had an orgasm in my sleep, and it was horribly painful. Really sharp stabbing cramps/contractions that had me bent over.

I thought for sure I was having a loss right there and then, but after a few minutes it stopped and I haven't had any bleeding. It was potentially made worse by me having been asleep so not appropriately 'warmed up' so to speak but I really was not expecting it to be that painful.

I have read numerous posts online about it being normal even when that painful and not necessarily going to cause a loss... But wtf! Anyone experienced this?

I had this! I often orgasm in my sleep so I was horrified when it hurt that much!
Full disclosure, I did miscarry at 10 weeks but I was having these cramps from very early so not connected at all (I asked the midwife!)

@Rycbar glad to know I'm not alone in it! I was sure I must have been miscarrying from the pain, but like you say everything seems to say that it doesn't cause miscarriage and lots of people have this and carry full term. Very odd and scary though!

As someone who has experienced both, the pain of a miscarriage is A LOT worse but obviously at the time it’s pretty scary and is an intense feeling so completely understandable to be scared by it!

It’s not discussed enough how enormous those pregnancy orgasms are. I used to have them in my sleep too, although they never hurt. I’m sure you’ll be fine, OP.

MyCoralHedgehog · 28/05/2025 14:06

Blimey! I think I need to get pregnant! 🤣

Sdpbody · 28/05/2025 14:18

I have genuinely never heard of orgasms in your sleep whilst pregnant (or in general).

Wednesdayonline · 28/05/2025 14:20

@Sdpbody you're missing out then 😂 except at the moment when it feels like being stabbed

Steamy dreams are the best perk of being pregnant. Don't remember it being painful though, quite the opposite.

Emmz1510 · 28/05/2025 15:04

I occasionally have them in my sleep too, generally it’s if I haven’t had one in a while!
I don’t remember them being painful during pregnancy but certainly a lot more intense, asleep or not! ☺️

I’ve had painful orgasms but not while pregnant. Mine was due to B12 deficiency. Do you eat much meat? Could be pregnancy depleting your stores?

Obvs ask midwife too, but supplements could help.

CalamityK8 · 28/05/2025 16:55

I used to often orgasm in my sleep. I still do occasionally even in my late 60's, though I find it a bit upsetting now I'm a widow and he's not there to cuddle up to when it wakes me up.

Wednesdayonline · 28/05/2025 17:19

@SnowflakeSmasher86 I actually take a B12 supplement and do eat a good bit of meat! The cause (according to the internet) is increased blood to the uterus and all the changes going on there, paired with the tiny contractions of the moment! Who knew aye, not everyone gets it seemingly but it's not an experience I'm in a hurry to repeat!

I had exactly this when I was pregnant with my first. Sleep orgass (also used to get it when going through puberty). The first time it happened was so painful and I was so scared we rang 111. I ended up having several scans because they thought I might have miscarried, but everything was absolutely fine. I got them several times in that early stage of pregnancy when I think everything was stretching.

Wednesdayonline · 28/05/2025 20:57

@Teddlesisagoodboy thank you for sharing your experience, it's good to hear you've been through it and it was okay! Couldn't believe it could hurt like that.

More than fine. She's 9 now 😊

I had this (the stabbing pains) during early pregnancy each time I was pregnant, sometimes due to orgasm and sometimes completely not. (By the way, never while asleep!)

After many tests (about the pain) it was determined that I had a UTI and when that was treated with antibiotics, the pains stopped.

With my last pregnancy, the moment I knew I was pregnant was the moment that these pains started! I went straight to the GP and got antibiotics and the pains stopped, and I was in VERY VERY early pregnancy, like just a few days!!

My kids are now 10 and 13 and very healthy. Go see your GP xxx

@laurajayneinkent that's good to know thank you! Did you just get it once or was it a repeating thing for you? I haven't had any pain since.

Just once per pregnancy. Cured each time by antibiotics. Best of luck xxx

Hey ladies; was so glad to come across this thread in the early hours of the morning. I am 5w1d and woke up around midnight experiencing the most intense orgasm. It was not nice at all, every muscle in my pelvis was tensing, my uterus, bladder, abdomen, even my urethra felt like it was tensing lol. I was cramping so badly I thought I was miscarrying, went to the loo and popped a pad on just in case, but never saw any discharge or blood and haven’t seen any as of this morning either. Hope it was a one off

Mine carried on like that until the second trimester and now back to normal. The pain was extreme. But baby all healthy :)
