28 weeks movements ….no pattern 🤔

Hi all,
I’m 28 weeks and feel very lucky and reassured that my baby is moving a lot (I’m high risk and have had lots of anxiety esp as a ftm) however there is zero pattern to her movements.

when I’m on the go I won’t feel her, same if I’m in the car or on public transport. However I will take time out if I’ve had a busy day and feel kicks….which is great (tends to be around 10pm before bed)

However I read that there are times of the day your baby is more/less active and a pattern will emerge?

Am I right in thinking some babies will not have a pattern? I’m not counting kicks but should I?
I find the literature on baby movements sometimes more confusing than it should be and not reassuring in the slightest 😪

is it ok just to carry on and make sure I feel her most of the time? And take time out if my day has been busy to sit and feel kicks? X

Honestly mine was completely random, as long as they are regularly thumping you throughout the day I wouldn't worry.

That sounds like a pattern to me? I think "pattern" just means knowing what's normal for her. It doesn't need to be a regimented timetable, just knowing when you'd expect to feel movement. In your case, you feel her when you settle down, and in particular in the evening. I'd actually count that as a pattern x

I had no more of an idea about a pattern than the man on the moon, also never bothered with counting as I knew it would drive me crazy. I just made sure I could feel it when I sat down at night and was aware of a few kicks during the day. I also felt some of the movements got a bit less as the pregnancy went on, I think cos there was less room and it was more hard bits pushing out every now and then!

Im 33 weeks and have never had a clear pattern. Except she is generally more active second half of the day and barely moves first half.

I've been in 3 times with reduced movements, always fine. Scans all fine.

I hate that the movements aren't more consistent as I have a worry every day. And I'm concerned now if something is wrong I'll just think "she always does this, she'll move eventually".

2nd DD never developed a pattern which my midwife helpfully suggested was her pattern!

Somedays she was mental, other days I'd be on the brink of going to triage and shed do a little shufty. Anxiety inducing for sure but some babies don't develop a pattern you just have to go with it and learn what's really unusual for them rather than usual iyswim?

Thanks for everyone replying.

the whole she doesn’t have a pattern is her pattern is exactly what I’m feeling 😆 it doesn’t make much sense but does at the same time.

In my 4 pregnancies I don't think I noticed any regular pattern of moving and stillness. There were times of day they would sometimes move more, or maybe it was just the times I was lying still and more able to focus on their movements. They'd all seem to move a lot while I was in the bath or lying in bed. As long as I was feeling regular movements with no change I wasn't worried. If I ever was, I'd give them a nudge, usually light strokes on the belly.

ZebraPrintt · 26/05/2025 23:17

Mine was random. I used to feel him more at night because I was relaxing. I didn't feel him much through the day because I was busy. As long as your feeling baby I wouldn't worry

Awobabobob · 26/05/2025 23:22

i had anxiety throughout my last 2 pregnancies. What I found helped was when I felt a movement I would take a mental note of the time. That way I would have an idea as to how long since their last movement was, because time can go a bit weird when you’re trying to remember when you last might have felt them move.

My baby never had a particular pattern in terms of time of day etc, like you I was more aware of his movements when I was still myself.
In case it helps, what I noticed when his movements changed was that they became much less vigorous. Instead of having my whole belly visibly shift, I had to stop and concentrate to feel any movement at all.
I went up to the hospital to be on the safe side, and thank goodness I did. They put on the heart monitor and were really worried, and recommended an immediate caesarian. Baby had other ideas and was born before we could get to the theatre.
I'm not sure what the problem was, but he was fine as soon as he was born.

I never noticed a pattern in first pregnancy so haven’t tried to in this one (29 weeks now and certainly haven’t noticed a pattern, just that she moves fairly frequently). Had lots of reduced movements incidents in last pregnancy (I think mostly my anxiety) and it would just be that I hadn’t felt her most the day, rather than there being a change in pattern
