Positive Stories of General Anaesthetic in First Trimester

Hi everyone 👋🏻 this is my first post after much time browsing!

Short question is: has anyone got any positive stories of having general anaesthetic while in the early stages of pregnancy? I am 1-2 weeks and need to have essential surgery in the next few days.

Background story:
I just found out I was pregnant this Wednesday which is so exciting - it was the first month we properly tried. I am 31. I am already getting a few symptoms - sore boobs with larger and darker nipples, a bit more thirsty and peeing more, occasional metal taste (noticed this twice and it was like an blood taste) and mild cramps.

I am in the very early stages - my digital on Weds said 1-2 weeks and I believe I was only 9/10dpo on Weds based on my Natural Cycles app. I also did 2 line tests which came up positive (a faint line but defo there) 🥰

Anyway, as life does, I got another big piece of news on Friday, two days after my BFP. I went for an eye test as I was getting a few more mild floaters than usual and just wanted to check all ok.

On the OCT scan they picked up my left eye retina is detaching and was sent straight to a&e for checking, then sent to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London the next day.

I’ve had all my pre-op checks and paperwork done and they know I am pregnant. I need to have an eye operation in the next few days and they strongly advised I have it under general.

They discussed the risks with me of general and pregnancy and I’ve done a bit too much googling for my liking the past few days - both on that and the op itself!

I obviously don’t have much choice in the matter as if I don’t have the op, I will lose my eyesight gradually in that eye and having local anaesthetic would really not be advisable due to the type of operation I need to have.

I know they always have to tell you the risks and I know that there is always a risk in the first 12 weeks of miscarriage - with or without this situation. I obviously don’t want to lose this little chia seed but I’m also worried about potential birth defects or this harming baby in future.

Can anyone share some positive stories to put my mind at ease? 💕

There is no definitive evidence from large cohort studies that general anaesthetic increases the risk of miscarriage op. Not sure what you were googling but take comfort from that

I had a general at about the same time as you. He’s 12 now and perfectly healthy (if a bit smelly!)

Thank you both 💖
