Hi I’m 16+5 and at my dating scan (13 weeks) I weighed 2.5kgs less than booking in weight at 9 weeks
I weighed myself this morning and still at the 2.5kg less weight. I am in the obese category (38 bmi booking 37 now) so I’m still bigger!
I have a lot of anxiety because of previous losses so I’m just worried little boy isn’t growing as he should as I’ve not put anything on!

Could it be that it’s you who are losing weight as you are trying to be more healthy because you are pregnant? And baby is actually normal size.

Dreichweather · 18/05/2025 16:04

Have you been eating better?

Your body always prioritises the baby’s nurtitional needs above your own so your baby will be fine.

SheSpeaks · 18/05/2025 16:07

I put on 3.2kg from booking to 41 weeks with my first and then lost nearly 12kg in one week (with 4kg being the baby and then I’m assuming the rest placenta and water)

That is brilliant!

You are probably more aware of what you are eating and may be less hungry as feeling a bit meh.
For someone of your BMI it would be routine to advise a “weight neutral” pregnancy / ie trying not to put on any weight from booking ( in the expectation that this would likely limit your gain.
You do not need any extra calories at this stage of pregnancy, and only require an additional 200 kcal from 28 weeks.

My colleague actually lost about 2 stone throughout her whole pregnancy, she was obese and continued on slimming world. This was confirmed as the healthy option for her. Baby was healthy!

BendingSpoons · 18/05/2025 16:23

Your baby weighs roughly 100g. The weight change will be you and not an indication there are any issues with your baby.

MaleficentQueen · 18/05/2025 16:40

I weighed exactly the same, through my entire pregnancy. Didn’t put anything on, or lose anything. The midwife never mentioned any concerns. DD is now a thriving, and happy, 6 month old baby.

Thank you all for your reassurance, I’m not eating amazingly but am struggling to eat enough at times Main craving has been fruit which I suppose other than the cost is good 😂 If I lose after birth bonus I guess!

I had this as well. I think cutting out alcohol and eating better or less due to morning sickness caused a weight loss. Just mention it to midwife next time you see her for some reassurance.

I lost weight for my first 15/16 weeks too as I was eating better and not drinking beer :)

Superscientist · 19/05/2025 08:04

I lost about half a stone with my daughter in the first trimester. I went on to lose another couple of pounds in the third trimester too due to hyperemesis. I only gained just over a stone and was back at my pre pregnancy weight by day 10! I'm slim build so didn't necessarily have the weight to lose.
Baby arrived at 38+6 at 6lb13 which was 60th percentile for my chart so a good weight and had no negative effects from me struggling to eat all pregnancy.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 19/05/2025 08:16

I agree you are probably losing weight through eating healthier. Also lots of people go off food a bit in the first trimester so if that was the case you might have eaten smaller meals. I didn’t put on any weight in the later part of pregnancy despite the baby obviously growing as I had GD and had to stop eating sugar.

JMassey · 19/05/2025 09:05

I lost weight with my 1st pregnancy and he was born 8lbs 6oz! I remember my midwife not being concerned because of my initial BMI. I'm only 5ft 2 and have a small torso I couldn't eat much 😂

malimoon · 19/05/2025 11:02

I was overweight at booking and lost weight in first trimester/didn't really gain in pregnancy. I was feeling nauseous and eating less than usual. Baby was 8lb 11 so clearly he was well nourished in there!!

Lulu89x · 19/05/2025 12:39

If you are obese then losing weight will do you and your baby some good. At this stage baby takes everything they need from you. Even if you were to starve yourself, the only person that would suffer is you. Baby will be fine so dont worry!

Think its normal for most women to lose weight during the first trimester due to sickness and aversions. My BMI was 21 and I lost around 4KG in the first trimester as I did not want to eat at all. Baby is completely fine at 29 weeks :)

alsohappenedoverhere · 19/05/2025 13:48

Have you got Pcos as if so I think there is something about pregnancy that balances our hormones. I have never put weight on in pregnancy.

chichiwaaa · 19/05/2025 15:42

I had a high BMI while pregnant and lost weight throughout. It’s apparently a ‘normal’ thing to happen in women who are overweight while pregnant. Not to mention a lot of women in general lose weight initially as their appetite adjusts. Try not to worry
