13 week scan, feeling worried

Hi so this will be my 2nd baby, my first born is 10. So its been a long time since I've been pregnant as was told 7 years ago i'd never be able to conceive again.. Fast forward to March and we find out and were over the moon and so so happy.
So we had our first scan a couple of days ago at 13+1 and we kindly said no to the screenings for down syndrome etc.
Baby was very active moving and made it hard for pictures, arms waving, legs kicking was amazing to see..
I'm now panicking like mad as I think there could be an issue with the NT around the neck.. People are telling me its just the picture etc but I cant shake the feeling and wish i'd of accepted the test.. Can anyone shed any light? thankyou

Please don’t take medical diagnoses from random people on the internet. Ask your care team for advice. Hope all is well.

Absolutely nobody can tell you from a scan photo OP, you’ll need to go have the tests done if you want answers

LolaJ87 · 14/05/2025 12:29

Yeah unfortunately nobody here is a trained sonographer and even if there was one, they would need to see the scan in motion and take measurements rather than looking at a photo. If you have regrets about not having the checks done, you could have a scan privately or book a NIPT?

SErunner · 14/05/2025 12:37

If the sonographer (far more experienced than you) had any concerns from the scan they would have told you. It’s up to you re the tests but if you are worried it seems a bit odd to have not had them?

It was more the anxiety of waiting for results which is why I said no (suffer terrible with anxiety) but now I think I'm regretting not getting them. My partner also suggested if anything was wrong they would have said but I'm thinking if we said no to the screenings then maybe they wouldn't tell us if they thought anything was abnormal.
Maybe I'm just worried for nothing, I think its more the scan photos aren't really as clear as I'd hoped, I'm a little fragile I think!

Is there no NT measurement on your report? I thought they did that as a standard check. I assumed the extra screenings were pappA and hcg and NIPT etc

sugarplum33 · 14/05/2025 13:20

Check through your notes to see if they have recoded the NT measurement. Even though you declined testing I would assume they would point out anything concerning on the scan.

If you haven’t already, ask your midwife about perinatal mental health services, it sounds like your anxiety has talked you out of getting the testing which has in fact made you even more anxious now not knowing. These things can spiral so do seek help.

FaceOrf · 14/05/2025 13:24

Go back and request the screening. You are still entitled to it. Call your MW today. I say this as someone with zero medical knowledge so couldn’t interpret the photo in any way but it sounds as though you need to reassurance. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

If you can afford it you can get NIPT testing for approx £400 which is a simple blood test from you and gives you a more definitive result more quickly.

It’s not as simple as that. The screening has to be done within a certain timeframe and there is no guarantee that they will be able to rescan to do it within that time.

There is nothing on my notes about the scan at the moment. I don't recall them measuring the fluid (I was a blubbering mess as I was just relieved there was a heartbeat!), they did measure babies head and said it was normal so not sure if that includes the NT fluid.. We have booked a private scan for today, hoping I might get some better pictures to clear up my anxiety, and they will point out for sure any abnormalities.

You’re still within the time to get the nuchal fold measured. While that could be the nuchal fold it can also just be the amniotic sac.
