Perimenopause causing false positive

Hey all, so my husband had a vasectomy over a year ago but the past few weeks I've been feeling a little off, similar to early pregnancy. I took a test just to rule it out and now i am spiralling a little. Maybe just an evap line?? I've already been and got an early detection test which I will take tomorrow morning. I took another one later in the day which was completely negative. But I've heard that perimenopause can sometimes give false positives. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm 39 with 1dd already. I cant imagine a vasectomy reversing so quickly?!

Also, I'm not due on for another 6 days so this is very early I know. I just had a weird feeling

Did your husband get his checkup at the one year mark to make sure the vasectomy was a success? That test looks quite positive but if you were feeling off for a few weeks, you'd expect a strong positive and not a faint one. Hopefully it's just a faulty test.

Your age wouldn't preclude you though, I'm expecting a baby and will be 38 when she's born. I would think you're quite young for peri-menopause symptoms?

He got his follow up check and he had zero sperm count. We started the ivf process with my daughter and i was told i had significantly less eggs than average, so i just assumed i would hit menopause earlier. Luckily we didn't need ivf in the end. But we had such a rough time with pregnancy and covid we made the decision to have one and adopt one hence the vasectomy. We are just starting the adoption process haha. Hopefully just a faulty test.

Do you not want another baby?

LolaJ87 · 14/05/2025 12:27

I think taking the early detection with FMU tomorrow morning will give you a clearer answer either way.

We do want another child. I just wasnt going planning on getting pregnant again. But if the universe gifts us with one we will obviously welcome it. Having to wait until tomorrow to use first urine of the day feels like a huge wait. Haha

Wow OP, you must be so shocked! It does look positive, hope you get the result you want tomorrow.

I'm very lucky that either way we will be happy. I think i should get DH to go get another check up soon though!

How did this morning's test go @tothewombandback ?

Superscientist · 15/05/2025 10:47

My nan thought she was menopausal...periods stopped mid40s of course it's the menopause. The menopause is now in her 40s herself!!

How did you get one with this mornings test?

tothewombandback · 15/05/2025 10:55

Clear Blue Digital early detect says not pregnant which makes sense given how unlikely a pregnancy is. My period is still 4 days away, though, so it could just be too early. I woke up at 4am and tested straight away. I'm going to chalk it up to a faulty test yesterday and maybe a sickness bug the last week or so and just wait it out. Period should arrive monday?! Its going to be a loong weekend haha

Yeah maybe just a faulty test then - I hope you're feeling ok with the outcome x

tothewombandback · 15/05/2025 11:09

I am. We love our little family and hopefully soon we can give a child who needs it a loving home. If anything changes after the weekend i will come back and update.

Yes you can get false positives during peri. My friend had it. Same situation as you, DH had a vasectomy and she had a positive test. Went to the GP who tested her and said she wasn't pregnant. Apparently during peri the hormone that shows you are pregnant can play up and produce positive pregnancy results. Who knew? Anyway, she was relieved.

Also made me think of an episode of the TV show 'Breeders' this also happened to the main female character in the show. Positive test but GP told her she wasn't pregnant but was in fact going through the perimenopause so its definitely a thing.

This is good to know! I watched that episode, i knew i had that information from somewhere so thank you for reminding me! Its good to know for future reference as well i guess, just incase i ever feel a bit iffy again i can put it down to peri rather than panicking about pregnancy! I suppose i should probably go to my gp and ask about perimenopause now just in case.
