Missed period positive ovulation test negative pregnancy test

Hi! I missed my period. I tested my ovulation a few weeks ago and had a positive test. I felt the twitch in my ovary that i usually get when an egg is released. I then missed a period. I read somewhere that ovulation tests can pick up pregnancy. I didn’t have any pregnancy tests in so I thought I’d do an ovulation test. It was positive. It has been positive for 4 days but I managed to get a pregnancy test and did one tonight but it’s negative. I’m 49 , so maybe perimenopause…I don’t know. Has anyone else had this experience?

hi OP, not much useful advice here I’m afraid. I didn’t want to read and run. I suppose it’s worth asking what brand of pregnancy test you used and how late your period is?

Wsandy · 13/05/2025 09:17

It could be early to pick up on a test hope you get the result you want x

Thanks @Bas27 and @Wsandy It was just a cheap pregnancy test from Home Bargains - 3 for 99p test strips but they say 99% accurate on the box! My ovulation test is still positive. My period is 11 days late.

@Tillyminnydo you normally have regular cycles?

Uphighseesky · 13/05/2025 21:59

@Tillyminny are you sure the lh test is positive? A true positive lh test is where the test line is as dark as, or darker than the control. Not just that there are 2 visible lines.
Sorry if you already know this!

LH tests pick up HCG.

You could have implanted late. Test again with a more sensitive test (10miu) and it’ll probably be positive!

I would say it’s actually incredibly unlikely the OP is pregnant. She’s 11 days late on her period and getting negative tests. Yes ovulation tests can pick up HCG sometimes. But they’re not more sensitive than actual pregnancy tests. The OP is 49. The chances are pregnancy, while not totally impossible, are incredibly slim. The chances of weird hormonal fluctuations due to perimenopause causing a delayed period and weird ovulation tests is much much higher.

Yes, usually. I’ve never been this late before.

Yes it was definitely positive. Then the line was slightly lighter than the control but still very visible.

Multiple LH surges in one cycle do happen to women of all ages, but they are particularly common as you get older I'm afraid OP. I know you said you felt an ovary twitch, but are you absolutely positive this couldn't have been something else?
But in the absence of a positive test at 11 days late for your period, you are very unlikely to be pregnant. If you want to be absolutely certain, buy a better quality test, but I wouldn't expect a positive result. If that's not what you were hoping, I'm sorry.

Yes, I always get a twitch in one of my ovaries on ovulation, so it was definitely twitching. I guess I’ll just wait for a period to arrive…or not and maybe head into menopause.
