Constant urge to wee 13-14 weeks

I’m really hoping someone has some advice for me because I’m feeling really down and stressed about this.

Im 14 weeks pregnant (after 2 losses) and for the last almost 3 weeks have been feeling an almost constant urge to urinate!

The first few days I put it down to pregnancy but then I started having abdominal pains so suspected a UTI. Doctor dipped my urine twice, first time said it was clear and second said something showed up. They gave me 7 days of antibiotics (nitrofuratin). Culture came back clear 1 day later but I finished the course. No improvements in symptoms.

I called 111 as was a weekend and they referred me to out of hours GP who told me to go A&E because I was having pains and they were worried about kidneys. I went, waited 6 hours, they just dipped my wee and said it was clear and took blood tests that were all normal. Sent me home.

Next day, feeling very frustrated and uncomfortable, I called the EPU. They said I should contact GP again and get more antibiotics.

So I did. Did another urine test, results came back “no significant bacteria” but high WBCs and slightly high RBCs. 3 days ago I started a 7 day course of Cefalexin. Was feeling really hopeful, but woke up today and nope… Almost immediately after weeing, I feel the need to go again when I know I have nothing left to wee out!

I’m so stressed and have no idea what to do next. I’ve read some things about those with a retroverted uterus (like I have) feeling pressure on their bladder in early pregnancy but it’s been 3 weeks now almost and at 14 weeks I don’t know if anything would be pressing on my bladder?

I feel a lot better when sitting or laying down. It’s worst when I stand up and walk. No burning or pain when peeing. No back pain. Don’t think I have a temperature. Pee is clear and doesn’t smell.

Just an almost constant urge to go and all sorts of different abdominal pains throughout the day.

Any ideas? Any advice? Anyone had similar?

I’m so scared this will have caused damage to the pregnancy…

Sorry for the long post!

Any increase in bladder irritants in your diet? Things like caffeine, spice, citrus, tomatoes, carbonated drinks including carbonated water can all make your bladder more ‘twitchy’. Google ‘bladder irritants’ for a full list.

That sounds so frustrating and stressful 😔 have you spoken to your midwife about it? They can usually give a different perspective related to pregnancy compared to a GP in my experience. I’ve needed a wee nearly every hour since around 5/6 weeks pregnant (usually up 3 times in the night). I’m 16 weeks now and do have a retroverted uterus, but apparently it’s straighter at this gestation anyway. Hope you find some answers and reassurance soon!

Also, did anything turn up at your 12 week scan?

Im rather stumped!
You could try a vaginal probiotic (I use pro-ven) and some cystitis sachets - or if not safe in pregnancy just some electrolytes and up water intake and see if you can do a big flush out of your bladder. I know when I’ve felt like this my water intake often goes down as I don’t want the uncomfortableness when I go the loo. Watch your salt intake too x

Thanks for the replies!

@Bobbie12345 Unfortunately it’s not this as I’ve actually been avoiding these foods/drinks for a couple weeks now 🥲

@CustardCream31 Thanks! I haven’t spoken to a midwife no simply because I’ve been given no way to contact one which I’m actually confused about! 12 week scan was fine, they didn’t mention anything about my bladder or anything alarming 🫣

I don’t know if it can be as extreme but pregnancy does massively increase your need to urinate.

@Xwx1010 Thanks for the advice! I’ve just ordered some cystitis sachets and will keep drinking lots. Hopefully this feeling will go away soon it’s been horrible 😭

Double check ok to use when pregnant!

try some electrolytes in the meantime and some gentle warmth where it’s painful x

years ago I had all sorts of tests done due to constantly feeling like I had a water infection. No explanation but urologist said if I’m constantly dehydrated I’ll be irritating my bladder lining so hydration was a game changer for me. When ever I felt it coming on I’d have a sachet and up water intake and always seemed to work xx
