Fetal pole 6 weeks

I went for an early scan today should have been 6 weeks 4 days and all measured okay between 6 weeks and 6 weeks and 3 days depending on the angle. Since I’ve came away I’ve been thinking about what she said so she could see the baby and lots of progesterone around it and we were able to see and hear the heartbeat fine. She said there was no visible fetal pole yet and now I’m wondering should this have been seen or is it even possible to have a heart beat with no fetal pole? Tried googling it but I can’t make much sense of it has anyone had similar and what did it mean for you

Also should say the scan was done abdominally

To me this doesn’t make sense. My understanding is that fetal pole is the embryo which then grows to a fetus and then baby. So it’s the term that is used at the early stage.

Definitely not a doctor, but I didn’t have an abdominal scan until 10 weeks. They were all up the hoo haa before that (6 and then 7 weeks).

How can you see progesterone?

Olika · 07/05/2025 19:14

Yes wanted to comment on this progesterone comment too, how can one see a hormone?

cakefairy7 · 07/05/2025 19:14

See that’s what I was confused at because she said she could see the baby and heart beat but no fetal pole and my understanding would have been that it was what formed into a baby, she said she could see white around the baby which would have been progesterone or maybe she meant something that was formed by progesterone

Agree with @Olika after googling - the fetal pole is the embryo.

Im trying to think back to my scans. The white bit can’t yet be the placenta…maybe the sac?

Olika · 07/05/2025 19:17

I would ignore her weird comments. If she saw the baby and its heartbeat then all is fine. Oh and congratulations! 😊

I found this.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. You see the heartbeat in the fetal pole so it must have been there. And I'm trying to think what she might have meant about the progesterone.. you can't visualise it on scan. But progesterone does cause the endometrium to thicken in preparation for the pregnancy to implant so unless that's what she was getting at?

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 07/05/2025 19:24

Was it a private scan? Do you have a report of the findings - should be a one pager?

Either way, try and get someone else for the next one, but it seems your pregnancy is viable (heartbeat!) so well done and congratulations!

cakefairy7 · 07/05/2025 19:25

Thank you all so much for your help ☺️ yes @Lavenderandlemons that sounds right she said she could see something thickening which was good she said and she called it progesterone but it must have been the progesterone causing the endometrium to thicken. It’s just all so stressful in the beginning but definitely the heartbeat was a positive sign for now 🤞

Yes it was a private scan and the report was sent via email after and this is all it said so not much to go on in there compared to other places I’ve been

I was hoping for more sentences than that but you’ve got a crown-rump measurement and an EDD, so she thinks it’s happening! 😊

cakefairy7 · 07/05/2025 19:33

So was I 😂 places I’ve been before gave a detailed description of what they saw but she really kept it to the bare minimum
