Pregnant after missed miscarriage? Help?

Hello everyone, I had a missed miscarriage on the 2nd of April (we found out at our 12 week scan) we were absolutely devastated and decided to opt for the medical management route. I took a sensitive pregnancy test given to me by the hospital to check if I needed to go back, it was completely negative no line. We had unprotected sex on the 25th of April (the only day we had it) I took a pregnancy test yesterday as a precaution and it was positive, I’ve taken another today and the line seems darker. I’m very confused as I haven’t had a period yet. Is it possible? And if so what should I do in terms of contacting doctors?

Hi OP, it does indeed look positive. It's definitely possible as you usually ovulate before you get your first period after a loss. You must have ovulated around the time you DTD. It's good you know your conception date as that may help with calculating dates. However you need a scan to accurately date the pregnancy when you have no LMP to go by. Most EPAUs are good at organising you a dating scan when you've had a loss recently and can't accurately date the pregnancy. I would contact them and go from there.
I can imagine your head is muddled but just wanted to wish you congratulations and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy💜

Thank you so much for replying I’m hoping this one is healthy and I do feel happy but I’m trying to stay level headed, do you think it’s possible for it to be the last pregnancy still bringing it up on the test though? Either way is the EPAU the early pregnancy unit? I always thought I had to go through the doctors first before I get referred to midwife’s/ante natal team

No problem. Of course, you're trying to not get your hopes up I'm sure. I think if you had a negative test after completing medical management then it's very unlikely to be from the previous pregnancy. It may differ from location to location, but in my area you can self refer to EPAU (yes, sorry its called early pregnancy assessment unit in my hospital). Just explain your situation, it's very close to your miscarriage, you think it's a new pregnancy, didn't get a period, and need some advice. In my experience they'll be more than happy to see you in a couple of weeks. If that fails I'd go through GP as I can't be 100% how it works everywhere. Then official antenatal care you'll go the normal pathway of referral but this is slightly different.

Hello, I had exactly the same situation as you. I had surgery for a missed miscarriage in November, and got a negative pregnancy test about 3 weeks afterwards. I then got a positive test 2-3 weeks after that, before I got my period. We had been trying and I had tracked ovulation so I knew we had sex around the right time.

Initially there was a bit of confusion about whether it was a new pregnancy or products left from the operation (I got a slap on the wrist from a midwife telling me I should've waited for my period before trying again, although the surgeon said I could start trying right away!) I called EPU and they asked me to go in for a blood test to show my HCG levels, they said once this was over a certain amount they would scan me. They came back quite high so they did a scan and said it was definitely a new pregnancy, although there wasn't much to see at that stage. I returned 2 weeks later and they confirmed it was a new pregnancy and I was around 7 weeks. I was then referred back to the maternity unit and my pregnancy followed the usual route - booking in appt, 12 week scan etc. I did go for a private scan between 7 and 12 weeks as it felt like too long a wait for me with what happened before.

I'm now 23 weeks, and had a pretty straight pregnancy. They did offer me progesterone at the EPU as I had one miscarriage before and had very light spotting in this pregnancy.

I would definitely contact your early pregnancy unit and explain the situation, they should want to check you to see if it's a new pregnancy. Wishing you best of luck x

Yes you can get pregnant with out a period. I had a miscarriage mid December. I got a negative test on the 2nd January. My period didn't return and mid Feb I started with nausea, got a positive pregnancy test. I did a week's test and got 3+ so I contacted my epu to discuss early scans and progesterone. The got me in to have my HCG measured to determine a good time to scan me. They came back over 100k and I had a scan the next day and found out I was 8 weeks pregnant! I went on progesterone until 16 weeks and am now 19 weeks!
My midwife used my scan date to estimate a lmp to book the dating scan otherwise she would have used my miscarriage date. There is about 2 week difference between the two dates.

Congratulations on being 19 weeks! Very happy for you. I don’t have a midwife booking appointment till the 1st of June where I’d approximately be 8 weeks. So I’m contemplating going private and having a scan slightly earlier around 7 weeks to ease my mind, I’m worried it might be a chemical pregnancy now though. I did a digital test yesterday which was 1-2 weeks, and clear and simple strips but they don’t seem massively darker. What does everyone think??? These are all the tests done in the last week

Thank you!

I accessed the epu before my booking appointment, my midwife booked me in for the days after the epu scans just in case but she sent me the prescription exception certificate when I first made contact - I'm on regular medication so it was quite handy

Sorry I can't help on the tests I have only ever done the one each pregnancy. I'd say the test today looks like a strong positive. I'd try to take comfort in that for today.

I’m pregnant after a MMC and no period in between. 30+ weeks 💙🙏

It does look like a strong positive, my tests kept getting stronger. I was told that if I definitely got a negative test after my miscarriage and then it went positive in the weeks after that it was likely to be a new pregnancy, but I think the only way you can know for sure is to have a scan - maybe a private one would be worth it for your peace of mind?
