8w4d Ultrasound - Intra-amniotic clot?!

So I went for my second ultrasound today at 8w4d and they found and blood clot or ‘collection of blood’ that has formed INSIDE the amniotic sac. They said it’s extremely rare and couldn’t comment much further. The baby is fine, growing on track and has a healthy heartbeat. I’m just asking on the off chance has anyone heard of this or experienced this before? This is not a sub chronic hematoma as it’s actually inside the sac. Thank you x

i was told I had a bleed within the sac by EPU when scanned at 13+6. It was large and they didn’t give me any specific information but seemed quite negative. I left very upset and didn’t think they were helpful. I turned 14 weeks and could go to the maternity triage instead and had another scan a few days later and they decided it probably was an SCH. Still really huge. I was told to rest as much as possible. Have you had any bleeding? I had some terrible bleeds. Mine seemed to be connected to the placenta and I wonder if I was somehow bleeding both into the sac and into the SCH. The area of bleeding had reduced in size dramatically by my 20 week scan, but you could see bits of blood floating around in the fluid - the doctor said that was not something to worry about, so I guess it is ok?

My baby was ultimately born healthy; my waters went prematurely but not by much.

Thank you for this! That’s helpful and also reassuring, I’ve hardly been able to find anyone who had the same. Did you have any early scans before 12 weeks where they could’ve picked up on the bleed or was it only discovered later on? I haven’t had any bleeding really, a bit of brown discharge at 6 weeks but that it at the moment! I’m going to try and rest as much as possible over the next few weeks whilst we wait for our next scan. I have to say the EPU were not reassuring at all and hardly knew anything about it so couldn’t say much. I came away too feeling upset. When did your waters break if you don’t mind me asking? X

I had some bleeding at 10 weeks and a scan which showed a smallish SCH. Then I had a giant bleed at 11/12 weeks, which showed much the same thing at my dating scan. Had another giant bleed around 13 weeks, which is when I had the huge area of bleeding - apparently in the sac (it did look like it on the screen). I googled it as couldn’t find any info. I actually complained to the hospital as I felt they had left me with this unusual diagnosis and no forward plan - EPU just told me to call labour ward if I had more bleeding because I was too far along to miscarry at home (!), which might well have been good advice but was delivered very insensitively.

Following my complaint, I went to MFAU after more bleeding at 14 weeks and had a scan booked to check everything at 17 weeks. At the 14 weeks MFAU scan said they could see large SCH coming off placenta, and running to above the cervix. I was pretty much on bed rest for a couple of months, as concern was the bleeding would cause irritation and open cervix/break waters - it was about 10cm big. It was the same size at 17 week scan and then had shrunk down by 20 weeks. I stopped bleeding completely around 22 weeks.

My waters went at 36 weeks - I was kept in hospital and baby born healthy by c section at 37 weeks. The baby did have echogenic bowels at 20 week scan, which was almost certainly caused by the bleeding.

Thinking positive thoughts for you. It was incredibly stressful, so I really feel for you.
