Hey all, me and my partner are on cycle 1 of trying to convince since having our little boy (on cycle day 7) He’s 1 and our girl is 6. But we’re looking at doing at at home insemination as that’s what got us pregnant with our boy after 4 years of ttc. Has anyone done it? Did it work? Any tips for a better chance of it working?
Thankyou.

Hi OP, what method/s did you use last time and what were you hoping to improve on?

Hey, before we fell pregnant with our boy we was tracking ovulation every month, taking conceive vitamins, healthy eating ect. That all failed for 4 years so did an insemination and fell pregnant: just worried it won’t work again and it worked last time by coincidence because we was also baby dancing too x

Sorry, didn't see the reply.
I meant, what method of insemination did you try?

Moosey898 · 02/05/2025 15:30

Yep we have done it - conceived 5 times in 2.5 years (sadly 4 ended in miscarriage but this is nothing to do with the method of conception! Just genetic issues). 5th one I only just got a BFP so have to wait and see.

Give the semen 15min to liquidify, then I insert it slowly and as deep as possible to avoid too much leakage (but some leakage is totally fine and normal, as it would be with sex!).

I used to use proper kits but they kept upping their prices so instead I bought sample pots and vaginal "lube applicators" from Amazon and they seemed to do the trick just fine 🙂

We used a kit for £50 from Amazon x

sorry to hear about your losses: sending you all of the luck for this pregnancy. I’ve had 8 miscarriages but progesterone is the only reason my boy is here: maybe look into that?
did the insemination work first time? Or did it take a few months x

I think insemination has much the same chances of success as sex to be honest. Why should it be different?
Cheap syringes would also do the job.
You could try a soft flexible menstruation disc (not cup) to keep the sperm around the cervix for a bit longer.
Of course needs to be timed just like sex - in the days leading up to and just after ovulation 😉

Regenbogen22 · 02/05/2025 15:40

And definitely take the progesterone again if you've had several miscarriages, maybe also baby aspirin?

I've had my progesterone levels tested multiple times now and it's always been ok - I actually have 2 chromosome abnormalities, plus 2 have just been bad luck genetic issues unfortunately. Just not lucky it seems! I have a high risk of miscarriage so I'm not too hopeful. We were due to get out referral in for IVF on the NHS because we qualify for pre genetic testing so guess that'll wait a bit to see if this one hangs around! All my losses have been at 8-11 weeks so it's an agonizing waiting game.

Took a few months each time to conceive - most recent was quickest, I had a super early chemical last month which was 2nd month of trying after my most recent loss, so this time is month 3. Longest it took was 9 months. Feels like it is very similar to how long it takes from regular sex, if that makes sense?

We use the discs with the insemination. Insemination was the only thing that worked after 4 years so hopefully works again. We use progesterone until 16 weeks and then baby aspirin until 36 weeks x

Fingers crossed it can be successful for you again 😊🤞

TeddyBeans · 02/05/2025 16:43

We used a Calpol syringe and hips up + orgasm after insertion to try and replicate intercourse conditions as much as possible. We tried the fertilily thing but found it messy and really hard to get in the right place. Good luck OP!

Regenbogen22 · 02/05/2025 16:45

Also @MummaToDAndJ you will find quite a lot of info/posts in the Conception topic, or just Google "Mumsnet at home insemination"

The cup for afterwards do you mean? We hated that too so didn’t end up using it either was far too awkward just did the legs up and orgasm after too x

Hey It's is been a while since this thread, was wondering if you had any luck in the end @MummaToDAndJ ?

And in regard to taking progesterone, did you decide on that after seeing progesterone levels were naturally lower or was it a top up to be on safe side? And how do you get it?

Thanks!
