Nuchal Fold Thickness Anatomy Scan

I had my anatomy scan today at 21 weeks. I’ve had the NIPT and results are all low risk.

I noticed on the form given to me by the sonographer that the Nuchal fold thickness is 5.8mm. She didn’t mention anything at the time but did ask if I had the NIPT done. From researching I found out that 5.8 is on the high side. I’m just wondering if anybody had similar readings at the 20 weeks scan? I suppose I’m just looking for reassurance.

Hi, sorry I don't remember the measurements(it was 13 yrs ago) but with one of my daughters I was told it was very high ..they worried me unnecessarily as my daughter was absolutely fine.
If they didn't mention to you I wouldn't worry OP x

Congratulations on your pregnancy 😊❤️

The nuchal fold scan is usually done at 12 - 13 weeks not at 20 weeks. it may well just be a standard measurement given at the stage. We were told that any measurement under 6mm was normal at that stage.

Thank you. I’m trying not to worry but am thinking of ringing tomorrow to see if I can speak to the sonographer. I don’t want to be bothering them either though.

I think at 12 weeks they measure the Nuchal translucency at 12 weeks. As far as I’m aware that was normal as I wasn’t told otherwise and it’s not on the report from the 12 weeks scan.

Nuchal thickness should be less than 6mm at 20 weeks so seems like a normal finding. They'd have to tell you if they suspected an anomaly.

Yes, it’s normal but I have read elsewhere that where that anything over 5 mm is a grey area.

Combine that with your nipt results and the fact they haven't requested you for any extra testing or screening and I think it's fairly safe to say you're still low risk.
5.8 is still under 6mm.
If they found evidence of 5mm during studies was significant risk for downs, then the threshold would be 5mm not 6mm.
Call for reassurance if you need to. Or trust that they aren't worried and neither should you be x

I rang today, and the midwife was adamant it’s a normal reading and not to worry, so I will try not to. Easier said than done!

Hi I had my anatomy scan today and my nuchal fold measurement was 5.8mm I saw that you had a similar result how is your baby doing? Did everything turn out okay?

Redfriday · 13/12/2025 09:05

Yes, everything was fine. All that worry for no reason. I mentioned it at every check up afterwards and nobody seemed bothered. She’s 3 months old now and is doing great.

Nuchal translucency is done at 12 weeks, nuchal fold at 20 weeks.
