Repeat Gestational Diabetes test due to baby's size

Hey ladies,

I'm just curious whether anyone had to do a repeat diabetes test? I went to my 28 week growth scan today (currently 29+3) and baby is calculated as weighing 3 pounds 11oz and on the 97th percentile.

I know these things can be wrong, so just looking to see if anyone had a similar experience? My first glucose test was normal X

Hi, yes I had this in both pregnancies! It was a nuisance having it a second time, but second test came back within normal ranges too!

seriouslysara · 28/04/2025 22:47

Yes. It was just a ginormous, perfect baby!

SummerIce · 28/04/2025 22:52

Yep, happened to me.

I passed the glucose test in my second pregnancy but as baby was measuring on the bigger side, they asked that I do it again when I was around 33 weeks pregnant. I failed that test and was told I have gestational diabetes.

I managed it through diet which wasn’t too bad once I figured it out. When baby was born, he was the same size as my first so no issues fortunately. May have been the GD diet or perhaps he was always a bigger but not huge baby.

Yup - same here. Tested twice, negative both times. Currently pregnant with DC2 and that test came back negative - didn’t have to have a second one this time round.

Yep, happened to me too @MyPinkFish. I was told the whole way through that baby was huge - 97th centile. Would be 11lbs+ if I went to 40weeks. Negative for gestational diabetes twice.
They advised induction as due to baby’s size they didn’t want me going over 40 weeks. DS was born weighting 8lb 11oz so he was a good sturdy baby but certainly not the 11lbs+ I had been warned about!

This has literally happened this week to me. "Passed" my 28 week GTT but asked to do another one because a growth scans showed a big tummy. GTT at 33 weeks has come back positive for gestational diabetes. Apparently it can come on later.

DominoRules · 29/04/2025 12:56

I was tested 3 times with DS2 as he was massive! All negative but he was indeed huge, 10lbs 15.5oz at 38 weeks via c-section.

Blixem · 29/04/2025 13:07

I passed 2 GTT tests. I had glucose in my urine at 36 weeks and had another GTT test and passed but when I tracked my blood glucose levels, I did have GD, despite having passed the GTT tests.
I was 38 weeks when diagnosed with GD but DD was born at 39 weeks weighing only 6lb 10oz.

Exact same experience as me. When I finally saw the consultant which was a month after my second GTT test, he said it’s more likely to get false positives in later pregnancy, which is why the GTT test has to be done in a certain window. Because my daily skin prick readings were all normal and I had no issues, he thought I was a false positive so told me to carry on with the diet to be on the safe side, but I didn’t need to prick 4 times a day anymore, only 1-2.

SJM1988 · 29/04/2025 13:10

It is possible for the second GTT to be positive. I got tested at 34 weeks last pregnancy and it was positive. Earlier test was not.

Growth scans are very inaccurate though so I wouldn't worry too much. My youngest was suppose to be high percentiles (95 and above can remember exactly now). I was told she would be around 10lbs when born. She arrived at 39 weeks exactly at 7lb1oz. They were well out!!!

Thanks. Good to know. Will see how my readings develop! Still don't my machine or a consultant appointment yet.

I weighed 3lb something at birth at 28 weeks in 1989, I don’t think they checked then but that size probably did me well and I was quite sturdy in the end 😂 I wouldn’t worry and they’re sometimes not very accurate anyway
