Sterilisation during C section?

Does this still happen? I have found a few info leaflets that would suggest it does or can… but wondered if anyone had any experience of this… it would be requested during an elective section for a unplanned and very much last baby…

Yes, definitely still done in my experience. Request to meet with the obstetric team to get the consents done well in advance.

Only time I've seen it be an issue is if someone is wanting it done and has no other reason for a c section.. as in nothing medical, fetal, doesn't necessarily even want one, but wants the sterilisation. They usually won't do it in that case. But if you're having an elective regardless, it shouldn't be an issue. Other issue can be an emergency section where baby has been somewhat compromised and they can't tell how baby will do. Some doctors won't be happy to go through with it in that case.

Not sure how much help this is, but I was sterilised during a c section 22 years ago.

I requested this ten years ago and was refused. Trust policy was no sterilisation for women because their husbands/partners could have a vasectomy. I kid you not.

I had my baby 2 weeks ago by ELCS due to pre eclampsia risk and was sterilised at the same time. They asked me multiple times pre op and during the op if I was definitely sure as it is irreversible. Happy to answer any questions about my experience if you have any?

That’s shocking. But doesn’t bloody surprise me sadly.

I briefly considered it but husband going to get a V.

one thing that was highlighted to me was to wait 6 months after baby born to ensure all well and okay, in case you want another baby if something fatal happens to yours (bleak I know)

also a vasectomy is less risky and more effective. I’ve had 3 surgeries now, it’s his turn to take one for the team

yes I had this done a little over three years ago, however I was 42 with a history of miscarriages and my baby (conceived via fertility treatment) was very much my last one. I’m not sure if that made a difference but they were very happy to do it. My husband and I decided that while he could have a vasectomy I was on the table for my c section anyway

Make sure you talk it through thoroughly with your doctor - there is a higher risk of failure (which could lead to ectopic pregnancy) if the sterilisation is performed at the same time as a c-section so it's usually recommended to wait for a few weeks.
