Sugar obsessed pregnancy

Anyone else eating chocolate, biscuits and/ or cereal every single day while pregnant?! Before pregnancy I was generally a healthy eater with the occasional sweet treat, I still do eat very healthy meals and I love a salad for lunch and dinners, but I am finding myself craving/ needing more sugar than ever! I have tried so hard to go without but I just can’t seem to, I cannot go 1 day without something sugary. Today has been terrible, I have already had a can of coke, a kitkat chunky and a bueno! I’ll probably want a bowl of cereal later too 😩
I am having a girl, this pregnancy is so different from my first, I had the worst first trimester, I am now experiencing extreme PGP and all I want is sugar! I am definitely experiencing all of the old wives tales with pregnancy having a girl, my first pregnancy with my son was so easy, I didn’t even feel pregnant.
I am hoping this is something that will be easier to control once baby is out and it’s all just hormone related! Never needed so much chocolate in all my life!

Ah I was the same with my girl. They really are made of sugar, spice and all things nice. No sweet tooth at all with my boys.

Motherof1and2dogs · 21/04/2025 16:34

@TumbledTussocks did it stop for you when your girl was born? It’s crazy isn’t it how different pregnancies are. I also hope it doesn’t affect baby girl too much all this sugar!

Could you try substituting lots of fruit? It might be your body craving/wanting the vitamins and wanting fructose?

But yes! I’ve always liked a chocolate or two in the evening, but I can now devour an entire tray in a day. And then hike to the supermarket for more. Someone said to me about fruit and I now make sure I’ve had a fruit tray each day before I start on the pure sugar, and that seems to take the edge off!

WhatMe123 · 21/04/2025 16:41

Yes with dd2 I'd literally sit and eat whole packs of chocolate biscuits and I'd be disgusted in myself but I could not stop 🙈 weirdly I put on less weight with her then I did with dd1 so my body must have used it 🤔

WhatMe123 · 21/04/2025 16:42

Mine seemed to stop after the second trimester it was defo worse around the 15/16/17 type weeks

Motherof1and2dogs · 21/04/2025 17:00

@WhatMe123 My sugar cravings have increased and I am 27 weeks 😩 I didn’t eat much for weeks, up to about 21 weeks and actually lost a stone due to the horrendous sickness , now I can’t stop snacking! A whole pack of biscuits in one sitting sounds about right!

@AnotherDelphinium I do eat fruit but probably not enough of it to help with the cravings. I think I need to stock up and get more than just apples, oranges and strawberries as well as they are clearly not satisfying my cravings. I’ll add some more tasty fruits to my diet in hopes this helps. Thank you :)

Yes! I was all about the sugar when pregnant with my daughter. Specifically doughnuts.
With my son it was all about ‘new’ smells, no food cravings at all!

TeenLifeMum · 21/04/2025 17:12

First pregnancy was vinegar, ready salted crisps and gallons of plain milk.

Second pregnancy (twins) was all about the sweets, banana milkshake and coco pops.

All girls. First dd had colic, never slept etc, twins were super chilled babies (strong minded toddlers).

ecossegirl91 · 21/04/2025 17:33

Yeah I’m just not really a snacker at all in my pre pregnancy days but this one I can’t seem to get enough custard creams, bourbons and now the Easter chocolate is calling me 🫣 thankfully only 9wks to go and can return to normal! (Same thing happened in pregnancy one and the sweet tooth/snacky tooth disappeared!)

CharlieAndMoose · 21/04/2025 17:54

I can relate! I'm 33 weeks pregnant and sugar-mad currently (don't know the sex of my baby though). I've never had a sweet tooth before - normally I'm all about salty food and savoury snacks. I'm not putting on any extra weight other than the bump though, and baby is measuring on the smaller side, so goodness knows where all the sugar is going. I'm quite an active person so it may just be my body needs the sugar to keep fuelling itself?!

Nope2024 · 21/04/2025 17:58

@Motherof1and2dogs So glad I'm not the only one!! I'm 31 weeks and have been craving sugar for weeks and weeks. I physically can't eat any more fruit and have tried not to buy crap in food shop so there isn't any in the house - which means I'm usually going to the corner shop to get something a few times a week. 🫣 There are only so many carrot sticks, grapes, pears, bananas, satsumas, blueberries, sugarsnap peas and mango I can eat before the chocolate/biscuit/pudding demon shows up. (I will say that eating all the fruit first has at least kept me very regular.)

I couldn't stomach tea or coffee for ages, so I ended up going cold turkey caffeine-wise which means I'm very sensitive to it now. I've had to stick to well below the recommended amount otherwise I'm wired afterwards for ages.

I've been craving coke but I've so far resisted because it eats into my caffeine rations! Milk/dark chocolate has caffeine in it so have told myself I can either have chocolate or a coffee the same day. If I get desperate for a coke then I'd only be able have white chocolate and no coffee to wake me up...!

Fwiw (at the risk of sounding like an enabler!) I can recommend M&S chocolate-covered custard creams and Calyppos. The custard creams are nice but veeeeeeery sweet, so easy to put back in the cupboard. Calyppos give me my sweet hit straight away but take ages to melt so the sugary hit lasts longer. 🥲

ecossegirl91 · 21/04/2025 20:18

@Nope2024 oh my god the chocolate covered custard creams are so so good! So are the chocolate covered bourbons 🤩

Yes it stopped as soon as she arrived. I also got really into steak which I’d never eaten more than a single mouthful of before or since. I can’t tell you how incredible it was that pregnancy, as soon she was out it went back to be inedibly revolting.

jackiesgirl · 23/04/2025 00:53

I’m the same! Although I’m having a boy so it’s not just girls! Usually with a sugar craving I can have a biscuit or something and it’s gone but I need loads of it to satisfy the craving since being pregnant. Fruit doesn’t touch the craving at all no matter how sweet. Been like this since morning sickness wore off at about 12 weeks and I’m now 34.

Sure it's not gestational diabetes??

Motherof1and2dogs · 23/04/2025 08:00

@coxesorangepippin I have just googled the symptoms of this, I do have extreme thirst, craving sugar and extreme tiredness but I just put this all down to “pregnancy”. My taste has also changed so not sure that is anything to do with it.
I have my 28 week midwife appointment today, so I just mention this to the midwife? How do they test for this?
