When is best to have a nursing bra fitting?

I'll be 36 weeks on Monday and I'd like to have a nursing bra fitting, when would be best to book an appointment. I'll be having a c section on the 7th of may.

no point before the birth - your boobs will get so much bigger after the birth! Get stretchy bras, they will change shape/size constantly for the first 2 weeks

A couple of months postpartum, when your boobs have settled down.

@BakedBeeeen That's a good point, hadn't really thought of that to be honest. Any recommendations for some nice stretchy bras? I've got some like crop bras from Primark that I use for bed.

@Ticklishknees That's a good point, hadn't really thought about waiting for a couple of months.

I got fitted for a proper nursing bra when my little one was 11 days old. I also had a C section. (Until then I'd bought a couple online and a maternity/nursing one which was adjustable and fitted a couple of different cup sizes) We went out for lunch with baby and then to Bravissimo. My boobs went MUCH bigger when my milk came in on day 2 post birth. No point getting fitted before. I'm still BF now (13 months on). My boobs have really settled down but I'm still in the same nursing bras. They were really expensive, I got 3 and just wore them on rotation. They are slightly too big now but I'm going to go back to normal bras soon as not feeding much in the daytime now.

@Rainbowsunshine81 don't wait a couple of months, you will need good nursing bras before then!

Ticklishknees · 19/04/2025 15:40

I didn't need any before then. I just wore soft sports bras that I easily could pull a boob out of. My boobs changed so much in the first six weeks, than any bra I bought wouldn't have fit for long. Everyone is different though.

@Carshoppingnightmare I remember with my son going to M&S to be fitted for a nursing bra and them asking when how far along I was, I told them and they said oh no you're far too early to get fitted for one. It's been nearly 9 years since I've had to think about getting some nursing bras, it makes sense to wait, which I hadn't really thought of as. Probably best to wait until I've had the baby to go and get fitted, then will have a better idea of size, I've seen some in H&M nursing ones which come in small, medium large etc and don't know wether just for now to get a set of those to take into hospital with me.

@Ticklishknees I remember in my last pregnancy getting fitted, but can't remember how many weeks I was, I kept that size I think. It's been nearly 9 years I've had to think about nursing bras. I'm hoping that I will be able to breastfeed, I did find it difficult last time for the first weeks as was unwell after my c section.

I’ve never had a fitting. Just have a few packs of H&M in approximately my usual size and they are fine. Would definitely suggest that and then if you want a proper fitting wait until milk comes in / settles down

Rainbowsunshine81 · 19/04/2025 16:43

@Sinkingfeeling952 I've seen some in H&M that I quite like the look of and they're reasonable. Definitely a good point in waiting, which I hadn't really thought about 🙂

I measured my bra size in late pregnancy to get an idea of my size at 36 weeks was about the size I was about 3-4 weeks post birth. At the end of pregnancy and when my milk initially came in they were about 2 cup sizes bigger

Rainbowsunshine81 · 19/04/2025 20:56

@Superscientist I might try and measure myself too see what size I am. I did get measured a couple of months ago in M&S for maternity.
