HCG rising but not doubling. Another miscarriage?

Well. I know nobody can tell me which way this will go, but I feel like writing this might help me.
multiple miscarriages between 5 and 9 weeks.
Now pregnant again and have been given baby asprin. Also been given progesterone but told not to take it until HCG reaches at least 8/900.
It was doubling at first. Then was 121 at 14dpo
215 2 days later
Another 2 days and today 357 18dpo.

Seems to me like it's curving off too soon.
Nothing to do now but have my bloods again in a week and watch my internet cheapy tests to see if they continue to get darker.

I'd love someone to have been through similar with a positive outcome. I'm well aware this could be another fail and I'm trying to prepare myself.

With my first baby my HGC wasn’t doubling, I was having some bleeding too which is why they were taken. However she was fine so I am crossing everything for you that this works out xx

Statsinyoureyes · 18/04/2025 20:43

I think it's meant to double every 72 hours which is 3 days. So I'd say your numbers look OK? Thinking of you, it must be very difficult. I've only had one loss and i was super anxious for my next pregnancy. Fingers crossed for you.

PennyPencils · 18/04/2025 21:50

Thank you @Firsttimemummyworries and @Statsinyoureyes
It does help and gives me a little hope.

It's 70% every 2days so you're below but only just. I would guard your heart as you know, but it isn't a completely definite conclusion yet. Wishing you all the best.

PennyPencils · 19/04/2025 06:43

Thank you @TheQuietestSpace my line is darker again today so ill keep fingers crossed but yes, it's too low to be confident.

Something that's making me worry is I see people on here taking progesterone from shortly after ovulation, or at least from a positive test. But despite asking twice,y Dr is adamant it could cause more harm than good if I start it before HCG gets to around 900.
I feel like if it needs ot to grow and thats causing my miscarriages then I'm missing the opportunity to help it along.
If they often stop growing at 5 weeks, starting progesterone then is too late anyway! So frustrating 😖

That's nonsense about the progesterone. My babies are IVF but you start progesterone in an IVF cycle 5 days before you even transfer the embryo..... it's not harmful. I'd ask for a second opinion.

Whisper99 · 19/04/2025 10:35

I think the danger of taking progesterone too soon is that pregnancy can be in the Fallopian tube. I think in the first few weeks of pregnancy 1.7 to 2.2 of HCG rise is acceptable, progesterone can be started if gestational sack is seen in the uterine cavity.

With IVF you start progesterone straight away due to chances of pregnancy in the wrong place are much lower. Also, IVF is a medical procedure and usual pregnancy is not.

I also read that from week 8 of pregnancy it is normal for HCG to raise by 53% rather than double every 48-36 hours.

Good luck 🤞

Thanks for the replies. I don't think he's worried about pregnancy in the wrong place as a reason as at 4.5 weeks he could have scanned me to check where it was. Would have been a small black dot but he could have confirmed.
He said that together with the asprin it could actually make me bleed and then miscarry. I want ro trust him as a Dr but I've never read anything like that on mumsnet from the hundreds of threads I must have seen on the subject.
For now I'll be 5 weeks monday, and bloods due to be taken Friday again. Then i guess a scan if its over 1000

If you're miscarrying at 5 weeks it makes me think it's more chromosomal issues with the baby and not being compatible with life than it is with progesterone.
That fact that it is rising is a good sign.
Also, starting progesterone in ivf is very different to a natural cycle as in the natural cycle we have the fertilised egg giving signals for our body to start producing progesterone for implantation and onwards.
Ivf obviously do not have this as they are working with day 3 or 5 embryos outside of the body that need to be introduced into a setting that is ready for it and therefore need to stimulate progesterone artificially.
I have had multiple miscarriages from a range of week, and even though I have, i have never been given progesterone nor aspirin even when asked, and the protocols now in a different health care system actually make more sense than the NHS. (Progesterone only once baby is growing and hb established as then it's less likely to be chromosomal and only if bleeding is present)
Also stress hormone is a huge blocker or progesterone.
It's a horrible wait, but just try to be positive and remember that every pregnancy is different and that's why there is a range in the progesterone and hcg levels of women in the forat trimester, it doesn't necessarily mean it will always end in loss.
Fingers crossed for your next draw that it's still going up!

@Echomama so helpful, thank you so much for taking time to reply at this frustrating time for me.
I've been through it so many times you'd think I'd be used to it. But each one is different so has me wondering and worrying.
Again, thank you. Your post has actually calmed me.
I'm quite good at coping with it as there is so much to be thankful for having two children already and there's only so much I can do. Bit still. It's not the most fun feeling, this unknowing and waiting.

Not feeling too hopeful now. Line looks lighter today. Have been really guzzling the water recently so a tiny chance it's more diluted.. but unlikely with FMU.
Excuse the scruffy scribbling.
I'm feeling more pregnant today than I have for a few days. Was like this in one of my previous miscarriages though so expect tomorrows line will be lighter still and then ill know for sure what's coming.

I'm sorry, I'd be worried too. Keep getting the EPU to support you just in case it's in the wrong place.

PennyPencils · 21/04/2025 06:11

Plot twist! It's darker today. Still not celebrating but there's a little hope.

Hi, thanks for asking. Slightly darker barely again today. Was hoping for the elusive line stealer. Time will tell..
