I’m pregnant (30 weeks) after a loss and so I do have a bit of anxiety around ordering things. My mother in law is harassing me, constantly asking when I’m buying things and I’m getting so fed up with the constant questioning. She doesn’t know about the loss. I just wondered when people bought stuff/set up the nursery, I know I can’t wait until my due date.

I'd get started now!

vincettenoir · 18/04/2025 08:39

Around this time, 32 weeks. All the best.

I'm 32 weeks and bought all the big furniture about 2 weeks ago. DH has set it all up now so it's all sorted, and we're now setting about buying all the little bits now that we have storage space. I'd say now is a good time to start. Like you, I didn't want to start too soon and "jinx" it, but at this stage the pregnancy is very much viable and you will be full term in 7 weeks. Plus I'd get everything sorted whilst you still have the energy - I've had an easy pregnancy so far but the past few days I've noticed a big change in my comfort and energy levels (and not in a good way!).

I think from about now xx

I also had major 'buying stuff' anxiety. I bought everything (clothes, furniture, carseat, toys, pushchair) at about 30w in one massive order from John Lewis and one big order from boots for nappies, wipes, pads etc from Boots. Put it all away and thought no more about it until baby came. I just found it easier to do it all in one go rather than constantly shopping for this and that.

Thanks, sounds like a good idea. I know what I intend to get so I may order everything after my 30 weeks scan next week.

We ordered a pram system this week and I'm 31 weeks. We have moses basket/crib already with family and friends from our previous child but I refuse to collect them yet, so I'd imagine I wouldn't have thought about buying that stuff until now either. We bought our first baby grow today.
I'd say you definitely need to allow yourself to be looking now and keeping an eye on delivery times - we swapped travel system because we had left it too late to comfortably have it arrive in time.
We had a previous full-term loss so we know the buying anxiety all too well

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/04/2025 17:39

36 weeks! Lots of losses, had a stay in MAU and they started talking about potential of baby born during the stay! I had nothing before then. Baby then born at 40 weeks.

mummybearsurrey · 18/04/2025 17:40

Inherited stuff. Throughout. Incl day time rocking crib.

purchased bedside cot on eBay in month 8.
ditto Stokke Tripp Trapp and babyset
purchase pushchair / car seat etc at a car boot sale. Also in month 8.
also Hana baby wrap sling - borrowed from a sling library 1 week before birth.
right size baby clothes - purchased 1 week after birth!!!

anything new we bought when needed.

Quornflakegirl · 18/04/2025 17:41

I started around 12 weeks, just a few bits and by 20 week I got the more expensive items. I had twins so needs doubles of a lot so needed to spread the cost. They arrived early so glad I did.

Offthecut · 18/04/2025 17:46

I’m glad it’s not just me with the anxiety of buying stuff. Had 2 losses and now 22 weeks pregnant..we’ve already bought some second hand baby grows we got at a jumble sale and today we’re clearing out one of our bedrooms for the nursery which made me cry with worry (so much anxiety)
today we bought a pram and travel cot off Facebook
so it’s kinda bits and bobs but it triggers my anxiety
I also like to plan and be prepared so really I would start soon x

AHBM2022 · 18/04/2025 17:47

I started buying clothes when I found out the gender at 16 weeks, I also got the next 2 me crib at 12 weeks as it was reduced from £120 to £20 on fb. Found this lovely lady on fb who was getting rid of her wooden crib for free, and when I told her I was a first time mum she also gave me a highchair for free. I’m now 21 weeks, and my sister has just bought me my pram for me. I’m not planning on buying anything else till my baby shower at 30 weeks, and then I will do a checklist of everything I’m missing and buy the rest then :) I have been very lucky for all the opportunities I’ve found, and have been quick to snatch them up. I also have a healthy start card (which gets topped up £17 from the government every month) which I use to buy diapers and wet wipes every month as a slow stock up.

coldscottishmum · 18/04/2025 17:50

Baby 1 - about 12 weeks, far too early.
Baby 2 - about 26 weeks after multiple misscarriges.
Currently 24 weeks pregnant with DC3, will evict baby2 from the cot eventually. Still have bedside crib and all the bigger things as DC2 is still under 18 months. All kids the same sex, so I’m not really sure what else I need to get aside from basics and more crib sheets.

Sorry for your losses OP. I found it really hard getting organised for DC2 after previous loss. Do it when you’re ready, the shops will still be open even if it takes you a few weeks! X

Edit just to disclose I have bought next to nothing so far! Nappies, wipes, clothes and a car seat and all your needs met PP and your grand for the first few weeks ☺️

wishIwasonholiday10 · 18/04/2025 19:11

Sorry for your losses. We started buying stuff after the 21 week scan.

If you are buying any large items or even smaller stuff 2nd hand I’d definitely start now as it can take time to find the right stuff in the right condition for a good price.

Clothes are easy to come by so can wait (and will be easier to return if they don’t fit if you buy them closer to the birth). Some brands do have good sales which you could look out for if you are planning to buy stuff from specific brands.

MaltipooMama · 18/04/2025 19:20

My first pregnancy everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was bought by 12 weeks but that was mainly due to excitement and impatience. This time around I’m 29 weeks and have just bought clothes so far but none of the big stuff which we’re planning on getting in the next month or so

Fupoffyagrasshole · 18/04/2025 19:24

We just ordered a cot about a month before due date actually ! And I had a few packs of vests and sleep suits, nappies, wipes And buggy!

buggy was earliest thing I got actually as parents got it as a gift - think around 32 weeks!

i didn’t get much else until after she was here and we figured out what we actually needed.

Ruffpuff · 18/04/2025 19:26

I’m nearly 32 weeks. I’ve got pram, car seat, next to me crib, some nappies and newborn clothes. I haven’t even thought about the nursery…tbh I doubt it will get done before baby is born. I know I’ve still got bits to get but at least it won’t be the end of the world if the baby comes in the next few weeks.

If you’re finding it overwhelming then I’d start with the basic necessities first and then you can put them away until closer to the date. I found starting with the big/more obvious things easier xx

MumQ8 · 18/04/2025 19:46

At five weeks.
I was such high risk of loosing a baby, I knew if I didn't just act like it was all good. I would be too stressed.
I got a lot of clothing and toys off vinted in bundles. So slowly collected everything. Then he was due in the new year, which gave me the chance to buy the last and anything fancy during black Friday.
We all different if you feel anxious getting everything too early, then maybe just have your list ready. Know what you want from where. And get min 99. But have some essentials, mine surprised us and came early.

MorgN · 19/04/2025 11:13

I didn’t want to buy anything before third semester for the same reason and my husband and my parents were all climbing the ceiling since they wanted everything ready ASAP =D. Now I’m almost 33 weeks and we have some stuff ready but still not everything, I’m not too worried since worst case most things can be bought right away/with next day delivery.
also baby will be in our bedroom so not doing any work on their room/nursery at all, will deal with that once the time comes.
