Went to EPAU yesterday for a scan, pregnancy viable, now bleeding heavily

Hi ladies, I’m so hoping I can get some reassurance and help 😭

Went to EPAU yesterday (Monday) for a scan following some bleeding I had on Friday after sex. Was mild but the cramping was the worrying part. We were also concerned following a private internal scan we had 2 weeks ago about the dates of the pregnancy.

The last day of my period was the 17th of February, and the first positive pregnancy test was 16th of March, and we went to the internal scan Monday the 31st and the internal scan gave us a date of 5 weeks and 1 day approx. So we were alittle worried the dates weren’t adding up and the clear blue tests I kept doing kept showing 2-3 weeks so I was convinced the pregnancy had stopped developing when I should be 9 weeks this week but not.

Friday myself and partner had sex and I immediately bled afterwards and had cramping, which freaked me out so I called my EPAU and they scheduled me in for a scan which was yesterday. They confirmed the pregnancy was viable, there was a heartbeat and the embryo was around 6-7 weeks so gave us 6 weeks and 4 days approximately.

This afternoon I’ve had mild cramping, gone to the toilet and I’ve been bleeding so heavily that I’m utterly convinced myself I’ve lost the baby 😭 this has been going on for about 2/3 hours now.

i called EPAU and they won’t see me now until Monday for another scan 😭 and the sister had said A&E won’t be able to do anything so just make myself as comfortable as possible and try to relax (which is impossible!)

has anyone had any similar experiences or can offer any reassurance 😭😭 how can I see the heartbeat fluttering away yesterday to be bleeding so heavily this afternoon 😭❤️

Tried to add a photo but I don’t think it’ll be posted. It’s almost like day 2/3 of a period in terms of the texture and amount of blood 😭 it’s gone from watery and pink to thick red

Just mild cramping, the bleeding has eased off alittle bit and it’s gone back to a pinky colour 😭 just absolutely beside myself and worrying! Xx

The clot isn't a good sign op I'm sorry to say, with a mc you get period red type blood, it'll be as heavy or more heavy than a period with clots and cramps. Just have to see what happens over the next 24 hours I'm afraid, sending hugs

Hey. I hope everything turns out well for you but I just wanted to tell you my similar experience. I had some heavy bleeding when I was around 8/9 weeks pregnant and after 3 previous losses I was convinced I was miscarrying again. When I went for a scan, they told me that I had a subchorionic hematoma. They were not overly concerned and told me that it would clear up by itself but that I may continue to bleed. I still bled slightly for the next week but by my next scan it had shrunk and then a couple of weeks later had gone. I had a successful pregnancy and my daughter is currently being a little monkey in her bed next to me.
I hope everything works out for you. Xx

This is so reassuring 😭❤️ I’m clinging on to the hope. I’ve just been to the toilet again and it’s still pink, have some mild cramping and back ache but I think that’s the stress of all of today. Was on cloud 9 yesterday! It’s going to be a long few days until Monday again 😭❤️

I’m sorry but the dates really don’t add up. Try to remain optimistic but also prepare yourself that the worst could happen. Unless the measurements were out I don’t think I this looks good sadly.

Yetegs · 15/04/2025 19:51

If I’m being honest I would prepare yourself just in case. I know the EPU said the pregnancy was viable but I’ve found they will ignore dates being wrong and just say “you must have just got your dates wrong.” But your dates don’t add up to being 6.4. You should be 8 weeks. That’s quite a big discrepancy. Obviously it’s possible you did calculate your dates wrong or the EPU measured wrong or you’re just measuring small. But in my personal experience when dates are 2 weeks ago it hasn’t been a good outcome. Especially combined with the bleeding.

But there will be other people who have had a good outcome with similar I’m sure. So don’t necessarily lose all hope, but just be prepared.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I’ve been sat in A&E for 4 hours awaiting to be seen as I started gushing blood 😭 heartbroken

I think it’s actually more common than the stats would have you believe to lose a baby after seeing a healthy heartbeat. Happened to me. When I had my last miscarriage, the sonographer told me that what you see one day in the early stages you might not the next which is why early scans don’t really provide the reassurance people think they do. i’m sorry you’re gong through this but I’m not sure A&E is the right place for you. You’d probably be better off at home and trying to manage it with painkillers. You can use a bucket or something so you can see if the sac comes away.

PT1708 · 16/04/2025 07:52

Morning ladies ❤️

I was in A&E for 6 hours last night, bloods taken but not result of the HCG as they had nothing to compare it with. Cervix was still closed and the doctor was adamant because I’ve been taking 75mg of aspirin, this has what’s caused the bleed. My stupid naive self thought after looking online so much and TikTok videos of 75mg of Asprin would prevent a miscarriage and pre-eclampsia.

I was passing clots and literally gushing blood in A&E. Was so so horrible 😭 the amount of blood I lost last night was obscene. They’d recommended to admit me but I just wanted to go home 😭

I’m praying the EPAU ring me today.

75 mg of aspirin wouldn’t cause that, I took aspirin throughout my pregnancies

I agree. I took 150mg through my pregnancy and no bleeding. While there’s a risk of some bleeding it wouldn’t be to that extent that the op has

AndImBrit · 16/04/2025 08:23

If it’s any reassurance, I don’t think the gushing is anything to worry about over and above a MC (which of course is devastating enough).

I had very similar with my MC, bleeding through pads in minutes. That was for about 12 hours, then carried on with more “normal” bleeding for about 3 weeks.

I hope you have a better outcome.

WhatMe123 · 16/04/2025 09:24

There is a lot if blood during a loss, there's a thicker lining to come out than in a normal pregnancy. It can be quite alarming if it's your first however

PT1708 · 16/04/2025 10:04

Thank you all.

Just devastated. It smells and feels just like a period like I’m a day 3/4 of a period. When the doctor said my cervix was closed I had a small bit of hope. The bleeding is light this morning. Can’t be scanned for another 5 days which is agonising.

So sorry you're experiencing this. Could you pay for a private scan for reassurance?

doodahdayy · 16/04/2025 10:27

Yes I agree with pp. if you can pay for a scan please book one

PT1708 · 16/04/2025 10:58

I was looking at booking a private scan but the EPAU have put the fear of god into me that the heatwaves from the ultrasound could affect the pregnancy if it is still viable 😭 I had one on Monday at the EPAU in the morning. Do you think it would be safe to book one for today or tomorrow? And then go again Monday next week? Or do you think that’ll be to much exposure

Hi, I’ve bled in 4 pregnancies. Two were ectopic, one MMC and current one which I’m experiencing by far the most bleeding - including bright red like yours a few weeks ago.
i found out today that my bleeding is due to a subchorionic hematoma. bright red is a concern but it’s not always a miscarriage. Blood can mix with fluid and mucus on the way out too but yours does look like a small clot due to its colour.
Sex can definitely irritate your cervix (which is dealing with so much increased blood flow in pregnancy) and cause some bleeding.

i suppose what I’m getting at is it’s 50/50. It will be ok or it won’t, bleeding can go either way and I’ve heard so many stories that turned out ok and many that didnt.

Personally I wouldn’t recommend a private scan, I’ve heard some terrible stories and staff don’t seem aa experienced or specialist as NHS. They could give you incorrect info and cause more worry. I appreciate 5 days is torture - I’ve just waited 14 for my latest scan so I get it. But my advice is to rest; monitor your bleeding, no sex and wait until EPAU will see you again.
X

So sorry you're going through this. I would personally book a private scan, but of course it's your decision x

Pandakoala8 · 16/04/2025 20:04

So sorry you’re going through this. If you do want a private scan, rest assured that many private places use sonographers who the rest of the week are working within the NHS. I had an extremely knowledgeable and experienced sonographer at one of my scans and at another the private sonographer identified a subchorionic hematoma that the NHS had not. I would do your research and book a scan where you feel comfortable, if you feel comfortable having one at all before Monday. Good luck with everything. Have they asked you to do a repeat HCG after 48 hours to see the rise?
