Experiences of a sub chorionic hematoma

Has anybody had any experiences of a small Subchorionic hematoma being diagnosed at an 8 week scan? I haven’t had any symptoms but the sonographer spotted it. She did say that it was small and seemed to look like old/ brown blood but it has got me a little worried after previous losses 😢

I had this same thing, picked up at 6 weeks and still there at 8 weeks. It went away on its own and I never had any symptoms so was all good 🙂

Thank you for the reassurance! How long did it take for yours to self resolve? Was it quite small?xx

I had the same at a private scan at 8 weeks. Wasn’t mentioned at my NHS 12 week scan. No issues at all, if I hadn’t had the private scan I would have never even known it existed.

That’s good to hear! I did read that the majority of them resolve by themselves 🤞🏻

I had a very heavy bleed at 6 weeks had a scan and it was a subchronic hematoma, midwife was totally relaxed about it said they're common nothing else was said about it throughout the pregnancy. He's a very healthy 5 year old now.

Yes, I think it was on the smaller side. Not sure how long it took to go as I didn't have any more scans till 13 weeks, and it was gone by then. The fact they didn't schedule any follow ups suggests they weren't worried 🙂

Can you remember if it looked similar to my scan picture? I’m hoping I have the same outcome! 🤞🏻

This is reassuring! I haven’t had any bleeding with mine yet so hoping that it stays that way! 🤞🏻xx

I bled for the first 16 weeks of my pregnancy. I had heavy bleeding with clots to light bleeding. I was put on bed rest and absolutely no sex. The bed rest is not the normal approach, but because of my past miscarriage and this being my last embryo, my GP decided it was the best cause of action. The subchronic hematoma had resolved itself by my 20-week scan. My daughter is now 6.

I had this in my last pregnancy and I did bleed, however, everything was fine. The sonographer who spotted it said it’s common. Hope you’re ok, we were quite worried at the time x

imsosotired · 14/04/2025 20:21

I had a big bleed with one at around 6 weeks. My 5 month old is currently asleep in her cot. It was terrifying, but she was absolutely fine.

ReesesCupcake · 15/04/2025 10:31

I had one with my son. For me, I had a huge gush of blood, and continued to bleed for a good few weeks, but all was fine in the end.

I would say try to avoid any heavy lifting, as I am sure that’s what triggered mine to bleed. It pretty much much started the day I carried my grumpy toddler on the school run as she wouldn’t walk.

They tend to reabsorb by 20 weeks or so. If you do start any bleeding, please put your feet up and rest as much as you can. Bed rest is more often prescribed in America than it is here in the UK for some reason, but there is definitely a link between being more active and bleeding (in my experience).

Try not to worry, these are quite common. Most of the time all is fine.

SophieRules · 15/04/2025 16:27

I had a ‘medium’ one although I can’t remember the size, I was warned I might bleed and I bled at 9 weeks. Scary but I’ve been fine since and by the 20 weeks scan the hematoma had gone.

HLouise94 · 15/04/2025 19:29

It does sound like the majority of people seem to have ones that self resolve eventually! 😊

following as I currently have one, had a heavy bleed at implantation, heavy bleed at 8 weeks and bleeding currently at 11 weeks. Cramping quite badly atm feels like a period. Got a scan tomorrow but they did say they were quite common!

Xwx1010 · 21/04/2025 16:44

I currently have one. Not picked up at 6 or 8 week scan, had had some brown and red spotting. Few hours after 8w scan had lots of red all night. Cleared up and nothing since apart from brown. 10w scan showed large SCH, appears to be solidifying hence the brown. Still on and off spotting for me but actually feel more reassured knowing the reason instead of assuming mc. I’ll know in 2 weeks how it’s getting on.

They said usually it makes its own way out (brown blood) or re-absorbs.
If the bleed is larger than the sac or in a certain position it can cause concerns but if your nurse/sonographer did not discuss this with you then I’d say try not to worry. Seem to be really common.
mine is large but sac is larger and it’s not in a worrying position despite it looking so on the scan.
good luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Hopefully it will all self resolve for you. I’m hoping mine will be the same. Thankfully, I’ve not had any spotting at all yet so really hoping that it stays that way and then when I go for my scan it is all cleared 🤞🏻 I’m 9+4 now xx

I’ve had one in both pregnancies and both fairly big tbh. With my son I had a couple of light bleeds between 13 and 16 weeks, all was fine. This pregnancy i had one on my scan at 6ish weeks, still there at 12 weeks, i’m just over 20 weeks now with no bleeding at all. It’s different for everyone. It will hopefully just re absorb xx

MyZippyLemonBiscuit · 22/04/2025 13:55

Had my scan at 11, baby fine, the bleed has got slightly smaller since the last time but not by much. Think it may just be something I experience now and then. They weren’t concerned at all though, thanks for all your stories x
