Brown blood and measuring 2 weeks behind

I am supposed to be 8 weeks pregnant today.

On the Sunday, just before I turned 7 weeks pregnant, I had some very mild cramping, similar to what I would expect just before my period. I’d read on the NHS website that this type of cramping is normal, so I didn’t think much of it.

The next day (Monday), I had a tiny amount of brown blood on the toilet tissue after wiping, along with some mild cramping. I contacted the midwife and was told not to worry, that brown blood was old blood, and to monitor it. I didn’t notice any more blood that day.

The next day (Tuesday), I spotted some more brown blood later in the afternoon. The midwife said she wasn’t concerned but booked me in at the EPU for the next morning, just in case.

At the EPU on Wednesday, the transvaginal ultrasound showed that instead of measuring 7 weeks + 2 days, I was measuring 5 weeks (and a bit, can’t remember). I was asked to go back in a week to confirm whether there’s been any growth and see if a heartbeat can be detected. They couldn’t find any reason for the bleeding. They explained that it’s hard to know what will happen, but explained what a missed miscarriage is.

Since the appointment, the brown blood has continued. The blood amounts to what I would experience halfway through/towards the end of my period. The cramping is on and off (it’s still mild – I’ve experienced worse cramping on my period!). Does anyone know what might be happening? I’m prepared for bad news but trying to maintain hope!

LMP – 17th February

Average cycle length – 26 days

First positive test – 20th March (a week following missed period – Clearblue dates said I was 2-3wks pregnant)

Hi, I'm sorry I don't know what's happening, but I didn't want to read and run. Sending you hugs xxxx You're going back the day after tomorrow?

Nosirrah87 · 14/04/2025 12:20

Yes, I’m going back this Wednesday in the afternoon. It’s my first pregnancy so I wasn’t sure what’s normal or not. I’m preparing for bad news but trying to stay positive. It’s really upsetting. Thank you so much for the virtual hugs xx

Yes, it must be very upsetting for you indeed. Is there any chance you can take tomorrow off work to rest? You're going through a lot.

How are things, OP? Sending more hugs xxx

Hi @ThisFluentBiscuit. Thanks for asking. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I’ve had a missed miscarriage. My husband and I were devastated even though we were preparing for bad news. I opted for the miscarriage to be medically managed at the hospital, which is happening tomorrow.

Oh, @Nosirrah87, I am so sorry! That's really tough, and I'm upset for you. Must be really hard. 😢

Sending you hugs and flowers. 💐🌷🌹💐
