Overdue - stop me going mad

40+5 today with second baby. First baby was born at 40+5 after 2 day labour so I'm officially in new territory. I've had a sweep which did nothing. No signs whatsoever. Finding this time very lonely and boring (not to mention unbelievably uncomfortable) but also know that I won't get this time to myself again.

Anyone in the same boat?

Not currently in your position but I was 10 days overdue with my first baby.
We’d just moved into a house that had no kitchen other than a sink, so were cooking on a camping stove. I can’t remember why, but DP went to his parent’s for Sunday lunch on his own and couldn’t understand why I wasn’t t thrilled that he’d had a lovely roast dinner instead of the sandwiches I’d had.

I also stood on a wasp which made me cry.

The most irritating thing was MIL phoning every day to see if anything was happening. Like I’d suddenly say one day that I’d had the baby but forgot to tell her 🙄

It all came right in the end. DP became an ex and I ended up with two lovely boys.

I remember being "overdue" with my second after my first came 3 days early.
Happened when I least expected it one evening after no symptoms. Hang in there, baby will have to come out eventually!
Also if it helps in europe the due date is 41 weeks so technically by their standards you're still early 😅😅

@MagpiePi that sounds like a rubbish setup, and the thought of going over by another five days... Take my hat off to you. I am getting daily phone calls to DH from MIL "any news? Anything happening?" if DH wasn't such a mummy's boy I'd add an extra day onto sharing baby arrival news with her every time she asked.

@LaTable yes I keep trying to remember that 41 weeks is commonly used in Europe as a due date. Doesn't help when every man and his dog started contacting me at 40 weeks asking if I'd had the baby yet and whether I'd be having sweeps / induction to get things moving 😩

I got to 42 weeks before being induced. You have my sympathy.

I basically blocked half my phone, so people couldn’t ask me about it. I was on the brink of killing several people.

Then - I found having actual activities to do rather than sitting round twiddling my thumbs helped. Going out for a lunch. Going swimming. Etc.

ShrimpBoil · 14/04/2025 12:13

You get really uncomfortable at that stage OP, sympathy.
I was driven mad by people checking if I'd had my first baby (who went 12 days over!) So I added 2 weeks to second baby's due date when telling people and she arrived a week 'early'.

MagpiePi · 15/04/2025 14:53

@LaTable It does irritate me that pregnancy is commonly assumed to be 9 months when it is actually more like 10.

I thought that they calculated the due date based on a study of pregnant shop workers back in the 1950s or something, but it was later shown that being on your feet all day lead to earlier labour. Surely that must be out of date now, or did I actually make it up?

Beeches24 · 15/04/2025 15:57

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow so getting there. I think this baby will be overdue. Booked in for induction from 41 weeks.

Newbie887 · 15/04/2025 16:04

I got to 42 weeks and 1 day with my first, he had to be prised out. It’s very hard to be patient and you have my sympathies!! I walked miles each day to try and get him moving but it didn’t work. If I’d have known how crazy with sleep deprivation a newborn makes you I would have cancelled doing anything those last few days and just completely vegged out / stayed in bed with the tv on catnapping all day. Because now I have three and the ability to do that is a distant memory 😭😭

Asja · 18/04/2025 14:42

Any sign of baby OP? I’m in a similar situation, 40+3 with 2nd baby had a sweep wedneday and lost some of my mucus plug but just having cramps coming and going then totally stop! Driving myself mad as DS1 was on time! And partner works away and has limited time home now :( hope they don’t keep us waiting much longer x

koalabearboombox · 18/04/2025 17:48

@asja no sign of baby! I'm giving it another day or two then will opt for induction. I feel pretty confident that labour will start spontaneously if I give it another week, but frankly my mental health isn't great existing in limbo for so long (the constant barrage of "any news?" messages isn't helping...)

Aw I know, I know people mean well but as soon as you hit your due date that’s it everyone wants to know if baby is here and don’t leave you alone!! Hormones aren’t good told my partner I’m switching my phone off until baby comes 😂
