Had a dating scan - saw a healthy heartbeat - now bleeding - anyone got any words of wisdom!

I am nearly 9 weeks with dc3.

Had a dating scan on Tuesday everything was fine- which put my mind at rest a bit as I felt I wasn't having as many pregnancy symptoms and just wasn't feeling positive.

Yesterday, I started having brown spotting then really red bleeding but no bits IYKWIM - also felt a bit periody crampy. Having a bit of brown residue this morning.

Rang the midwife and I have an appointment for a scan at the EPU next Tuesday they won't scan until after a week after my last scan.

My last 2 pregnancies were fine and I have never had any bleeding before.

Seeing a healthy heartbeat is good and positive - surely chances of miscarrying are reduced. I am 41.

Sorry for no emoticons - keyboard will no longer do them - long story involving dd1!.

Any words of wisdom comfort etc.

I dont have any personal experience of this but I would have thought they should see you sooner than that!! I am sorry. I have heard that if you see a healthy heartbeat you are far less likely to lose the baby - hope that is a comfort to you. Let us know what happens.

cupsoftea · 16/05/2008 09:02

hope it will be ok - they really should scan you as you'd know what was happening

artichokes · 16/05/2008 09:04

Is there a private clinic near you where you could pay for a private scan today to check the heartbeat? If you can afford it that is what I would do - just in order to relax.

hotmama - this happened to me at 7 weeks (but I'd stupidly helped a woman onto a bus with her twin buggy and I think that triggered the bleed). I had bright red blood and because it was my first (and very much wanted) baby, I went straight to A&E. They did a pg test, and I was still pregnant, and I had an internal, where I was told my cervix was still closed, which was a good sign, and I had to go back to the EPU the next day for a scan, where I saw the heartbeat (it looked like a flickering cursor!!!. But I bled exactly like you described a couple of weeks later (after I'd had a 12 wk scan, and I was convinced this time, I was losing the baby, so I rang the EPU, and went in the following day, and the baby was fine. I went on to have a healthy little girl at 38 wks, (cos she was lying across me and her foot had dropped into where her head should have been), but she was fine. STAY POSITIVE! It's a horrible, scarey time, and I wasn't happy until I had my baby in my arms, but she was fine. My friend bled really heavily for about 3 months into her pregnancy, on both pregnancies, and she has 2 healthy kiddies! Good luck with it. It's such a worry, and you just want the medical lot to have a lot more sympathy as to what you're going through. I'm sure everything will be ok.

I had the same this time around. Had major bleeding, only once at about 11 weeks....went for an emergency scan and everything ok.

I'm seven months pregnant now.

My problem was my placenta was lying low and i'd obviously irritated it ...

It's hard not to fear the worse but blood isn't always a sign of bad news - stay positive.

Hotmama, so sorry to hear your going through the stress of this (I'm lurking/vaguely posting on dec thread). Don't have any advice as my mc (with my first pg) happened before I'd been scanned and by the time I was scanned things were gone. Is it worth badgering them and seeing if pushed (not that you should have to be pushy) they would scan again sooner? Good to see positive stories on this thread and I hope you can take heart from them. Be thinking of you and hope things are fine.

Pinkjenny · 16/05/2008 10:17

Hotmama - I bled from 5 - 8 weeks, had a scan at 7 weeks, and showed baby's heartbeat, but I still carried on bleeding for another week.

DD is one tomorrow!

hotmama · 16/05/2008 10:46

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I do feel a bit more positive today - no red bleeding and only a bit on brown.

I know it is common but it is worrying when it is you first time to bleed.

Your stories are giving me hope - so thanks!

same happened to me so i had a scan and then saw the heartbeat.
i also read, or maybe imagined so don't take this as fact but if you see the heartbeat your odds of miscarrying are massively reduced. sure someone will confirm this if i'm right.
also brown blood is old blood and that's better.
i had bleeding for about 4 days at about the same time as you and everything was fine.
nothing you can do apart from take it easy and worry!!!
i worried till the 12 weeks was up!
good luck

CantSleepWontSleep · 16/05/2008 17:55

I think that the risk of m/c is reduced to around 2 or 3% once you have seen the heartbeat.

Lots of possible reasons for a bleed, some ok, some bad. Hoping it's an ok one for you hotmama.

mummy2olivia · 16/05/2008 18:12

I have my fingers crossed for you hotmama.

But I want you to promise me that on Monday you will pester EPU and insist on being seen sooner.

Unfortunately things didnt work out for me but I was a lot sooner on than you (miscarried at 7+5 which is a prime time to miscarry because of chromosomal abnormalities apparently) and with seeing a heart beat at your stage your chances of there being a problem are much much lower.

Please please get it checked out though.

Thanks for all of your kind words etc - they are really helping.

Luckily, had no more bleeding today and feel well.

The EPU won't see me before Tuesday as they said won't do 2 scans in a week - so Tuesday is the earliest they will see me.

The EPU did say if i started clotting etc then ring the GP to get admitted - they were actually very helpful.

I am feeling a lot more positive today after hearing so many people say that it is common and to be positive as a heartbeat was seen.

So crossed fingers - and a big thanks to you all.

I bleed from week 7 - 21 and now have a nine year old.

I just took it easy whilst this happened but still got on with things. At 21 weeks it stopped altogether.

best wishes and positive thoughts

okaythen · 16/05/2008 20:09

hotmama, glad to hear that there's been no more bleeding today and that you're feeling well. Hope the next few days fly past for you so you can get that added bit of reassurance.

abbymeg · 16/05/2008 21:11

hotmama sorry to hear of your bleed. I bled at just under 9 weeks with DD (same as you described) and was convinced it had all gone wrong. It was actually Christmas Eve and it made a very miserable holiday for everyone, especially as they couldn't scan me until after Boxing Day. When I went she was a bean with a heartbeat. She is now nearly 10 and has just been to the school disco!

But, I totally sympathise. It changed my pregnancy completely; I became very nervous about over-exerting myself as I'd been rushing about on the day I bled.

I do think that week 8-9 is common for breakthrough bleeding from your period; I'm possibly around the same as you (should be 8+1 but scan last week moved me to 8+5) and I dread it each time I go to the loo as I'm expecting to have some bleeding after last time. I know that it's common and unlikely to be a sign of MC (especially, like you say, after you've seen a heartbeat) but it doesn't stop it being bloody terrifying when it happens!

hotmama · 20/05/2008 12:55

Just to let anyone know, went to the EPU and dc3 is fine!

Still wiggling away with a healthy heartbeat.

They couldn't see any reason for bleeding - so I shouldn't worry unnecessarily - yay!

So am calm now (until I have my CVS on 5th June)

Thanks for all of your support.

Brilliant news

cadelaide · 20/05/2008 13:04

Good news hotmama. I had DC3 at 41 and it was a fabulous pg, best of the 3 really.

I hope you find the same
